A Civil Society group, the Action for Accountability and Good Governance in Nigeria, has passed a vote of confidence on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan.

In a press briefing in Abuja, the President of the group, Prince Peter Bassey, said Professor Amupitan has anchored the commission’s work on transparency and adherence to the nation’s electoral laws.

The group stated that his leadership style and mastery of electoral processes in a short time have yielded results in areas such as“Early release of the Notice of Election and Timetable for the 2027 General Elections on February 13, 2026, to dispel speculations, guarantee early, adequate and robust political parties’ preparedness; timely voters’ inclusion; all-inclusive engagements; and to give stakeholders certainty.

“Successful coordination…and timely announcement of results in Anambra State during the last Governorship Election.

“Successful coordination of the FCT Area Council Elections and timely announcement of results.

Proactive preparations for the upcoming Ekiti and Osun States Governorship Elections, scheduled for June 20th and August 8th, 2026, respectively.

“Announcement of INEC’s preparedness to commence Nationwide Voter Revalidation Exercises, in order to further sanitise the national register ahead of 2027,” the group said.

Speaking on the calls for the resignation/removal of the INEC Chairman by some Nigerians over an X handle account carrying the name ‘@joashamupitan’, which Nigerians have accused of making partisan posts in 2023, the group said, following their forensic investigation, it was a move by detractors.

“We, therefore, call on the security agencies to always hasten efforts to apprehend any of these distractors in good time whenever such is noticed before it escalates, as we all know what the Cybercrimes Act talks about: misinformation, disinformation, distortion and presentation of information falsely over the internet to make it appear to be real.”

They called on all Nigerians to support the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, in carrying out his duties of ensuring credible electoral processes.
