Kaduna Chairman Proposes Health Scheme Enrolment for Marriage Approval

0

The Chairman of Kudan Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, Hon. Dauda Abba, has proposed that intending couples must present proof of enrolment into the Kaduna State Contributory Health Management Authority (KADCHMA) before being permitted to marry.

Abba made the proposal on Monday at the Kudan LGA Secretariat during the inauguration of the informal sector enrolment campaign by KADCHMA.

According to the chairman, the initiative aims to boost uptake of the health insurance scheme while ensuring that couples, especially pregnant women, have access to quality healthcare services.

“The ₦10,650 annual premium covers a wide range of services, including antenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care — with or without complications — making it a comprehensive healthcare solution for expectant mothers,” Abba said.

He emphasised the importance of financial protection against unexpected medical expenses and noted that requiring the KADCHMA card would encourage more people to take advantage of the scheme’s offerings.

To enforce the proposal, Abba revealed plans to issue an Executive Order to the legislative council of the LGA, urging them to pass a by-law mandating KADCHMA enrolment as a prerequisite for marriage and political office.

“We hope to finalise the by-law within the next two to three weeks and share it with relevant stakeholders. It will mandate KADCHMA enrolment for marriage registration and for individuals contesting political positions,” he stated.

The chairman also pledged to personally sponsor the enrolment of 1,000 individuals, with plans to expand to another 1,000 beneficiaries after the first phase is completed.

He called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, ward development committees, and other stakeholders to sensitise their communities and support the implementation of the scheme at the grassroots level.

Earlier in the event, KADCHMA’s Director-General, Abubakar Hassan, explained that the campaign seeks to promote access to quality, affordable healthcare without financial hardship — in line with the vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage in Kaduna State.

He described the initiative as part of Governor Uba Sani’s Rural Transformation Agenda, which aims to serve underserved and remote populations by reducing maternal and child mortality through health insurance access.

“More than 50 women have already given birth via Caesarean section under the scheme, without the burden of out-of-pocket payments,” Hassan noted.

He appealed to stakeholders to become enrolment ambassadors, supporting the campaign through community mobilisation and development planning.

In his remarks, the District Head of Kudan, Halliru Mahmood, commended Governor Sani for initiating the programme.

He described the ₦10,650 registration fee as a modest investment considering the significant healthcare benefits it offers.

Mahmood expressed optimism that the programme would substantially reduce maternal and child mortality and provide critical financial relief to families, especially the most vulnerable.

The campaign, which also targets Chikun and Kagarko LGAs, is supported by a coalition of development partners, including EngenderHealth Consortium, the International Society for Media in Public Health (ISMPH), the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), and the Legislative Advocacy Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals (LISDEL).

Community volunteers, traditional leaders, ward committees, and religious stakeholders were all in attendance at the launch.

Nigeria, Egypt Sign Landmark Aviation Agreement

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Enhanced Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with Egypt, strengthening aviation ties between Nigeria and Egypt.

The signing ceremony took place in Abuja, where Keyamo received the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdellatty, to formalise the agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in the aviation sector.

The agreement, which was initially conceived during the 2024 International Civil Aviation Negotiations (ICAN) Conference, marks a significant milestone in the deepening of bilateral cooperation between both nations in civil aviation.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Aviation Minister described the signing as a “strategic breakthrough” that reflects the mutual commitment of both countries to strengthening connectivity, facilitating technical exchange, and opening new investment opportunities within their respective aviation sectors.

“This agreement is not only a fulfilment of the engagements we started during ICAN 2024 but also a bold step toward enhancing air connectivity, boosting tourism, promoting trade, and fostering knowledge transfer in aviation management and infrastructure,” Keyamo noted.

The enhanced BASA allows for expanded route access and operational flexibility for designated carriers from both countries, while the MoU covers technical cooperation, training, and infrastructure development initiatives.

On his part, Dr. Abdellatty expressed Egypt’s strong desire to build a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship with Nigeria, particularly in sectors where aviation catalyses broader economic growth. He commended Minister Keyamo for his visionary leadership and proactive drive to modernise Nigeria’s aviation sector, noting that Egypt views Nigeria as a strategic partner on the continent.

Both ministers reaffirmed their governments’ commitment to implementing the provisions of the agreement in the spirit of mutual respect and shared progress.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, including the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim  Kana, and representatives from the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Nigeria.

This development adds to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reposition its aviation sector through international cooperation, modern regulatory frameworks, and increased private sector participation in aviation infrastructure.

Adeleke promised to deliver the road project within twelve months, tasking the people on protecting the projects and supporting the government.

Nigeria’s GDP Grew By 3.13% In Q1 2025 – NBS

Latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) indicates that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.13 percent in the first quarter of 2025.
The latest growth figure was pushed by the services sector, which expanded by 4.33 percent and contributed 57.5 percent to the GDP.
The Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive officer of NBS, Adeyemi Adeniran who disclosed the development said it was an improvement from the 2.27 percent growth recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2024.

Agriculture sector grew marginally by 0.07% in real terms better than the -1.79% contraction recorded in Q1 2024 but still far from its potential.

In nominal terms, the sector contributed 19.40% to GDP, down from 20.86% in Q1 2024.
The new figures emerged from the successful rebasing of Nigeria’s national accounts to 2019 prices from the previous 2010 base year.

This, according to the apex statistical agency, is essential to ensure that the National Accounts reflect a more accurate and current picture of the structure of the economy.
Adeniran noted that the services sector continued to play a leading role in economic output, growing by 4.33% year-on-year and contributing 57.50% to real GDP.
According to him, the Telecommunications and Information Services showed strong promises expanding by 7.40% in real terms and accounting for 10.59% of GDP, compared to 10.17% in Q1 2024.

The report notes that the Finance and Insurance sector were not left out in the race as they witnessed growth of 15.03%, aided by digital innovation, broader financial inclusion, and improved operational efficiencies in banks and fintechs.
Positives also came from the Trade, Real Estate, and Transportation sectors. Trade grew by 1.78%, contributing 18.21% to GDP, while Real Estate rose 4.61%, and the transportation sector surged by 14.08%, influenced by positive growth across road, rail, air, water, and pipelines.

For the industry, the sector recorded a year-on-year growth of 3.42% in Q1 2025, compared to 2.35% in Q1 2024. Within the sector, oil production averaged 1.62 million barrels per day (mbpd), an increase from 1.57 mbpd in the same period of 2024.

The development however did not mean stronger real growth as the oil sector’s real GDP growth decelerated to 1.87%, down from 4.71% a year earlier, with its share of total GDP declining slightly to 3.97% from 4.02%.

The manufacturing sector posted a real growth of 1.69%, led by sub-sectors such as Food, Beverage and Tobacco (3.48%), Chemical and Pharmaceutical Products (5.33%), and Cement (4.94%). The manufacturing sector contributed 9.62% to GDP in real terms.

The construction sector remained strong with 6.21% growth, reflecting a combination of government infrastructure projects and ongoing real estate development.

FCTA Concludes Capacity Workshop, Develops 2026 Operational Plan

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has concluded a four-day capacity-building workshop for health leaders and managers, culminating in the development of a 2026 Annual Operational Plan (AOP) fully aligned with the FCT health budget.

The event was held under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) programme, with technical support from the Federal Ministry of Health.

Speaking at the opening session, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, urged participants to deliver a data-driven and budget-linked AOP.

Dr Fasawe emphasised that aligning the plan with government priorities would enable the FCT to access funding via the Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs) and attract more robust support from development and implementing partners.

The training drew over 70 senior health officials from across the FCT and partner organisations. It marked a significant step in strengthening FCT’s health systems and enhancing service delivery.

The 2026 AOP integrates critical national and local priorities, including the HOPE Health Agenda, Health Sector Strategic Blueprint (HSSB), and the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).

In a post-training assessment, Lami Tauhid Ndayako, Dr Saleh Mansur Ashafa, Dr Magaji Basil, and Bolaji Aliyu emerged as the top performers, having demonstrated a strong grasp of planning principles and a sound understanding of the HSSB, SWAp, HOPE Governance, and MAMII context.

Earlier, Dr Teresa Nwachukwu, Acting Director of Health Planning, Research, and Statistics and FCT SWAp Desk Officer, said participants were equipped with crucial skills in health systems frameworks, systems thinking, bottleneck analysis, and problem-solving.

She added that attendees received training in the HOPE Disbursement Linked Indicators, healthcare delivery strategies, data literacy for decision-making, and performance dialogue.

The workshop also featured modules on monitoring and evaluation, accountability, research and learning (MEARL), leadership, team building, change management, and interactive sessions using the web-based AOP tool.

Dr Nwachukwu highlighted key financing gaps identified during the workshop.

These include the lack of budget lines for essential activities such as monitoring and evaluation, family planning, nutrition, public health laboratories, risk communication, and emergency services across various FCT Secretariats, Departments, and Agencies—despite existing recommendations by the National Council on Health.

The workshop concluded with a final communiqué, issuing a strong call to action.

Participants resolved to enhance alignment and coordination with development partners, bolster health financing at the Area Council level, institutionalise regular capacity building for health workers, and advocate for increased domestic and donor funding for the sector.

A key output was the accelerated development of an equity-focused, budget-aligned 2026 Annual Operational Plan, reflecting FCT health sector priorities.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from FCT Secretariats, Area Councils, and implementing partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), ARFH, Pro-Health, and Elephant Health.

The sessions were facilitated by national experts from the Federal Ministry of Health and SWAp Desk Officers.

Kogi State Pledges Road Rehabilitation, Security for Bunu People

0

The Kogi State Government has pledged to prioritise the safety of the Bunu people and rehabilitate dilapidated roads in the district, in line with promises made by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo during his electioneering campaigns.

The Deputy Governor, Salifu Joel Oyibo, made the pledge at a reception marking the 100th birthday of the Olubunu of Bunu, His Royal Majesty Oba Joseph Ikusemoro, and his 64th anniversary on the throne.

Oyibo assured the people that the administration would fix the Edumo–Okeoffin–Ayede–Olle–Iluke road, a major route connecting over 20 communities. He said, “As for the security of this area, you can all attest that the Government of Kogi State has not rested and will never rest until everyone can sleep with both eyes closed.”

He commended the Bunu people for their endurance, assuring them that their suffering due to poor road conditions would soon end.

The National President of the Bunu Development Association, Pastor Kolawole Johnson, said rehabilitating the Edumo–Okeoffin–Ayede–Olle–Iluke road would significantly improve security in the district.

He noted that bad roads had contributed to rising criminal activities.

Pastor Johnson told the Deputy Governor, “Your Excellency, like Oliver Twist, the Bunu people will continue to ask more from your government—particularly in the area of security, for the protection of lives and property in the district. Another paramount request is the reconstruction of the Edumo–Okeoffin–Ayede–Olle–Iluke road.

“It is very disheartening to inform you that the Ihale–Taki road is not motorable during the rainy season. This has deprived residents of the ability to transport their farm produce to the markets. Even ceremonies are often postponed due to the condition of the road. We would be grateful if you could issue an express directive to the Kabba/Bunu Local Government to commence immediate grading of the Aiyegunle Ighun–Aduratedo–Ape–Igori–Aherin–Eshi road, as well as the Ofere–Ihale–Taki road and the Edumo–Okebukun–Okeoffin bypass road.”

The State Security Adviser, retired Commander Jerry Omodara, said the centenary celebration united the people and drew government attention to challenges hindering the district’s development.

The President of the Olle Development Association, Mr. John Ibisagba, described the Olubunu as a symbol of unity and a pillar of wisdom. He said, “The Olubunu’s hundred years on this earth and sixty-four years on the throne are a testament to God’s grace and a life of discipline, dignity, and service. He is more than a custodian of tradition—he is a pillar of wisdom, a bridge between generations, and a symbol of unity for all of Bunu land.”

Dignitaries from various walks of life attended the event, including Governor Ododo, represented by Deputy Governor Oyibo.

The Olubunu of Bunu, Oba Joseph Ikusemoro, thanked God for his centenary and 64 years on the throne and appreciated all who joined him for the celebration.

Azuka Okwuosa Wins APC Nomination for Anambra South Senatorial Bye-election lection

In a notable development for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, former governorship aspirant Hon. Azuka Okwuosa has secured the party’s ticket for the upcoming senatorial bye election in the Anambra South senatorial zone, scheduled for August 16.

This bye-election aims to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away a year ago in the United Kingdom.

Okwuosa, a seasoned politician with a robust career, including roles as a local government chairman and commissioner, emerged victorious in a keenly contested primary against Mr. Obinna Uzor.

In a vote conducted by a seven-member committee from the APC National Secretariat, chaired by Chief Henry Ikoh, Okwuosa garnered 470 votes, while Uzor secured 57 votes. A total of 594 delegates participated from all seven local government areas within the senatorial zone, with 22 votes deemed invalid.

Chief Ikoh announced the results, affirming the peaceful conduct of the election witnessed by representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media.

“By the authority given to me by the acting national vice chairman of APC, I confirm that an election was held. The exercise was peaceful, and I hereby declare that Azuka Okwuosa won the election,” he stated.

In his acceptance speech, Okwuosa expressed his gratitude for the support he received but acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding his victory due to the legacy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

“There is no winner, there is no loser. APC won. The greater battle is out there, and APC, as a party at the centre, is poised to win the election to continue the legacy of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah,” he remarked.

Reflecting on Ubah’s impact, Okwuosa expressed his determination to build on the late senator’s contributions, stating,

“He was a great senator and within the period he was in the Senate, he did a lot. I see it as a challenge for me to take over from where he stopped.”

Born on November 3, 1959, in Jos, Plateau State, Okwuosa hails from a devout Christian family in Anambra State. He has previously contested for the governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and had a brief association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 to 2003 before joining the APC.

His experience includes serving as the chairman of the Nnewi North Local Government Council and Commissioner for Works and Transport in Anambra State, as well as Secretary-General of the South-East Development Initiative from 2002 to 2010.

Lawmaker Eulogies Late President Buhari’s Impact On Nigerian Political Space

The member representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency and leader of the Northern Regional Caucus of the House of Representatives, Mr. Al-Hassan Ado Doguwa, has described the late President, General Muhammadu Buhari as a leader who left profound and far-reaching positive impacts on Nigeria’s political space and leadership qualities.

He stated this in a tribute for the late President.

Mr. Doguwa noted that, the passing away of certain individuals in the society leaves an irreparable void too deep in the lives of many as the death of President Buhari did to Nigeria and Nigerians.

“Late President Buhari was such a mentor, a father figure, and a statesman whose legacy will endure for generations. He was a man of uncommon integrity, rare honesty and profound dignity; resolute in character, steadfast in purpose, and unwavering in his commitment to personal principles for the greater good of our country.

“His service to Nigeria, spanning more than six decades, was marked by discipline, honesty, and a deep-seated love for the nation. Whether as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, or as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, Buhari’s impact on the Nigerian political space was profound and far-reaching”. Mr. Doguwa said.

The lawmaker said, as military Head of State, late Buhari introduced a regime of discipline and accountability at a time when Nigeria was sliding into corruption and moral decay.

“Although critics saw his methods as stern, his intentions were clearly for the greater good of Nigerians. His military government focused on restoring public confidence, strengthening national institutions, and enforcing public discipline. Those were difficult times, and history will remember that he governed with the conviction that Nigeria must be put on the path of justice.

“As civilian President, Buhari’s government achieved monumental successes in combating corruption, enhancing security, promoting economic development, and enhancing democratic principles, fair play and justice. He ensure unfettered reign of the principles of Separation of Powers between the three arms of Government”. He said.

According to the lawmaker, late President Buhari became the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat a sitting President which he said was a testament to the public’s faith in his personal integrity.

He said, “elected twice, he led with a sterling commitment to fighting corruption, national security, and infrastructural reinvigoration. His administration laid the groundwork for long-term reforms, investing in rail, road, and energy infrastructure that will serve Nigeria for decades to come. Under his leadership, the fight against Boko Haram was intensified, and the Nigerian military regained considerable grounds in the North-East.

“His commitment to rooting out corruption was unwavering, earning him both criticism and admiration, but always reflecting his sincere belief in Nigeria’s potential to be great”.

Mr. Doguwa further informed that, as Chief Whip during the 8th Assembly, he came closer to President Buhari when he noticed his sterling qualities of being an honest, detribalised and democratic president whose penchant for the welfare of the Nigerian people remained paramount in his mind at all times.

He recalled that, “During a recent interaction with former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, he said he considered it one of the great honours of his life to have worked during Buhari’s administration as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He said he witnessed first-hand his unwavering support for the legislature, even when some people sought to manipulate his office for partisan interests.

When the political tides became rough and there were attempts to destabilise the 9th National Assembly, President Buhari stood firm, in his belief that only the national interest matters.

True to his word, he resisted all attempts to undermine the legislative institution, and in doing so, contributed to one of the most stable and productive legislative sessions in Nigeria’s recent memory. His support extended beyond personal; it was institutional and highly principled”.

According to Hon. Doguwa, Buhari first spotted Femi Gbajabiamila on television screen when he was Minority Leader in the House of Representatives.

He said, “But he identified in him characteristics of a man who could lead Nigerian legislative house. So, he easily supported him for Speaker position during his administration.

“Femi Gbajabiamila has lost not just a father. For me he truly lost a fan, a mentor and a personal hero. I remember, Buhari once told me that he simply came to like Femi and wanted him to be the Speaker based on what he saw him doing on the floor of the House as a Minority Leader then.

“He said he loved his parliamentary acumen as well as his outstanding legislative performances, most of which he only viewed and read them on the television and on the pages of Newspapers. Sadly, today, our hero is no more”.
