Botswana Reviews National Health Insurance Proposal

0

Botswana has taken a crucial step towards universal health coverage after key stakeholders reviewed proposals for a National Health Insurance policy designed to guarantee every Motswana access to affordable, quality healthcare.

Health Minister Stephen Modise told participants at a national validation workshop in Gaborone at the weekend that the NHI is a central reform aimed at addressing persistent gaps in the health system, including long waiting times, limited resources and unequal access to services, particularly for citizens without medical aid.

Modise said the scheme will pool resources nationally to promote fairness through cross‑subsidisation and improve efficiency in service delivery.

He said the policy also seeks to strengthen infrastructure, support healthcare workers and ensure consistent availability of medicines.

The minister noted that the NHI will be compulsory but will allow private medical aid schemes to continue operating alongside it.

Navy Cracks Down on Illegal Refining in Rivers State

0

The Nigerian Navy has recorded another operational success under Operation DELTA SENTINEL with the interception of a large consignment of illegally refined petroleum products and the arrest of eight suspected oil thieves in the Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo areas of Rivers State.

In a statement, the Director of Naval Information, Nigerian Navy, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho disclosed that the operation, carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder following credible intelligence, led to the seizure of about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and the apprehension of suspects linked to the illicit trade.

According to him, acting on credible intelligence on ongoing illicit activities within the area, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER deployed an Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team which led to the interception of two wooden boats laden with about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

He said that, “The operation also resulted in the arrest of eight suspects linked to the illegal activity, while additional armed accomplices fled the scene upon sighting the naval patrol team

“The arrested suspects and recovered products are currently in custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution,” Captain Folorunsho added.

The Nigerian Navy reiterated that this success aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who has charged operational commanders to intensify efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other maritime crimes across the nation’s maritime domain.

Accordingly, the Service remains committed to sustaining the operational tempo of Operation DELTA SENTINEL through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrols and inter-agency collaboration to safeguard Nigeria’s critical national assets and economic interests.

Governor Zulum Visits Ngoshe, Vows to Rebuild Damaged Infrastructure

0

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, visited Ngoshe, about 40 kilometres from Gwoza, to assess the extent of destruction caused by recent attacks.

The visit was part of a two-day confidence and resilience-building tour to affected communities in Ngoshe and Pulka, where the governor also distributed cash and relief materials to over 30,000 victims.

Speaking after inspecting the area, Zulum described the level of devastation as shocking and deeply distressing.

“It is saddening to witness this scale of destruction. In recent times, I have not seen anything like this. It is sheer madness, but Insha Allah, we shall build back better,” he said.

The governor assured residents that both homes and public infrastructure destroyed during the attacks would be rebuilt, alongside intensified efforts to restore peace and security.

He revealed that officials from the Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement had been directed to immediately assess the damage for prompt intervention.

“I have instructed the ministry’s representatives here to carry out a full assessment so that all affected structures can be rehabilitated without delay.”

  • Zulum also disclosed that the Federal Government, under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recently released funds to the Multinational Joint Task Force to strengthen military operations in the region.

He noted that the Mandara Hills remain a major insurgent stronghold, stressing that sustained offensive operations are key to ending the threat.

The governor commended the military, particularly the General Officer Commanding 7 Division and the Brigade Commander, for renewed efforts in securing Ngoshe.

He added that troop deployment in the area has been significantly increased.

“The military has fully reoccupied Ngoshe and doubled its personnel. With these efforts, I am confident the town will remain secure.”

Addressing troops of the 82 Division Task Force Battalion in Ngoshe, Zulum assures them of continued support to strengthen operational capacity.

“Ngoshe is strategically important. Its fall would pose serious risks to Pulka, Kirawa, Gwoza, and even Bama. We will not allow it to fall again.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Kelvin Mambwe, disclosed this in an interview with the state broadcaster on Sunday, noting that the initiative is aimed at improving classroom efficiency, reducing teachers’ workload, and enhancing learning outcomes.

According to him, the adoption of AI will assist educators in delivering lessons more effectively while enabling students to better engage with their studies.

He added that the ministry will soon commence orientation programmes focused on the ethical use of AI, as part of efforts to ensure responsible deployment of the technology.

Mambwe further explained that the government is putting in place measures to properly train teachers ahead of the rollout.

He said the initiative also includes plans to digitalise schools and expand internet access across the country, particularly in rural communities, to equip learners for a technology-driven future.

The Permanent Secretary noted that AI tools will support pupils in developing projects and activities under the competence-based curriculum, while aligning Zambia’s education system with global standards.

Minister Urges Energy Hubs to Boost Africa’s Mining Industry

0

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has called on the United States and African countries to prioritise the creation of regional energy hubs as a key strategy to boost cross-border mining industrialisation and strengthen supply chains for critical minerals.

Alake made the call while speaking at a high-level panel titled “Critical Minerals in Africa: Meeting Global Demand” at the ongoing Powering Africa Summit in Washington, D.C., United States.

He stressed that sustainable partnerships with Africa remain the fastest route to meeting growing global demand for critical minerals.

The minister advocated the development of regional industrial corridors similar to the Lobito Corridor, citing the Lagos–Abidjan corridor—linking Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire and the Walvis Bay Corridor as viable models to unlock Africa’s vast mineral resources.

According to him, such corridors would act as economic catalysts by driving infrastructure development, improving energy access, and promoting regional integration across the continent.

“The development of nuclear power in one West African country, for instance, can service an entire corridor. With that in place, local beneficiation, technology transfer, manufacturing, and cross-border industrialization will naturally follow,” Alake said, noting that establishing three to five such corridors could significantly accelerate Africa’s industrialisation.

Highlighting reforms under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, the minister said improved governance, regulatory frameworks, and digitiaed licensing processes have repositioned Nigeria’s mining sector as a viable driver of economic diversification.

He added that recent reforms now guarantee secure tenure for mineral title holders, providing long-term stability for investors. The government is also expanding the generation of certified geological data to support informed investment decisions.

On security, Alake acknowledged existing challenges but pointed to progress made through the establishment of Mining Marshals. He disclosed that over 350 suspected illegal miners, including foreign nationals, have been arrested within the past year, with more than 150 currently facing prosecution.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s openness to investors, the minister emphasised strict adherence to local laws while outlining incentives such as tax waivers on imported mining equipment and full repatriation of profits after due payments.

“We have successfully de-risked and sanitised the mining environment, making it conducive to Foreign Direct Investment. Within the last two and a half years, we have attracted over $2.6 billion in FDI into the sector,” he said.

Also speaking, the Senior Vice President and Global Head of Origination at the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Sarah Whitten noted the importance of sustained collaboration and policy continuity in unlocking financing for critical minerals projects.

She said that while American banks are ready to support projects, their role is largely to catalyse private sector capital and facilitate long-term investment in the sector.

Nigeria to Integrate Young Engineers into Mentorship Programme

0

The Nigerian Ministry of Works has set plans in motion to integrate young Nigerian engineers into the Aleto Bridge project in Rivers state through a mentorship programme championed by President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi stated this during an inspection of the Aleto Bridge project, Rivers State, in the Niger-delta region of the nation.

Mr. Umahi explained that the mentorship programme for young engineers is in line with the Nigerian Government’s commitment to human capital development.

“We are making efforts on President Tinubu mentorship programme where young engineers will come and study what we’re doing here. They are our future leaders and it is a technical project to behold.”

He further raised concerns over the practice of parking fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles on newly constructed roads.

According to the Minister, such actions pose direct threat to the durability and lifespan of the roads adding that no road infrastructure is designed to withstand prolonged static loading from heavy vehicles.

“Yesterday I was passing through this road, the entire road we have completed was totally blocked, not by moving vehicles but fuel tankers, they parked on the road.

“No road project anywhere in the world is designed for static loads, they will destroy the road.”

With the total project cost exceeding ₦230 billion ₦156 billion for phase one and ₦83 billion for phase two the Minister stressed that such investments must be protected.

The Minister commended the contractors, RCC for the fast pace and quality of the work and also commended the Nigerian President for approving funding for the work.

The Minister described the Aleto Bridge Project as a landmark engineering effort, incorporating modern concrete pavement technology, solar-powered lighting, environmental landscaping, and reinforced structural features.

Shedding more light on timelines of completion of the project, Mr. Umahi said that one carriageway of the project is expected to be completed before May 25, 2026, with the first phase projected for full completion by August 2026.

He further expressed confidence that the second phase, which includes multiple flyovers and bridges, will be delivered within the year.

The Minister also highlighted the strategic redesign of the project from asphalt to concrete pavement, a decision directed by the President to ensure long-term durability.

London Jewish Ambulances Set on Fire in Attack

0

Four ambulances belonging to a Jewish community organisation in North London were set on fire overnight in what British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, described as a “deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack.”

The London Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and about 40 firefighters to the scene. Authorities said gas cylinders inside the vehicles exploded during the blaze, shattering windows in a nearby residential building. No casualties were reported.

According to reports, an Iran-aligned militant group, identified as the Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand, claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred near a synagogue in Golders Green.

The group also claimed involvement in similar incidents in Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands.
Prime Minister Starmer condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the Jewish community.

“My thoughts are with the Jewish community waking up to this horrific news,” he said in a statement, adding that antisemitism has no place in British society.
Israel’s embassy in the United Kingdom also condemned the incident, warning of rising antisemitism in London.

It called for a thorough investigation and decisive action to prevent further attacks.
“Enough is enough. There must be concrete steps to end this climate of intimidation,” the embassy stated.

Britain has recorded a surge in antisemitic incidents since 2023. One of the most serious cases occurred in 2025 in Manchester, where two Jewish worshippers were killed during Yom Kippur.

The Governor gave the assurance at the Victor Attah International Airport on his return from the United Kingdom, where he accompanied Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a State visit.

He said the trip afforded him the opportunity to meet with investors, particularly in the power sector, assuring Akwa Ibom people of positive outcomes.

“We expect something good from the interaction. It takes a lot of work, whether it is Ibom Deep Seaport or Power it takes a lot of work. We have made giant strides in reforming the power sector, but it takes a while, it is not a walk in the park, it is precept upon precept.”

Governor Eno acknowledged the current national power challenges, reiterating his administration’s resolve to improve electricity supply across the state.

“I appreciate the enthusiasm, and I want the Seaport like yesterday. I want power like yesterday. But we would like to go through these processes and I am sure we are doing it, and I know that by the grace of God, we will get there.”

On the Ibom Deep Seaport, the Governor urged patience, stressing that due processes are being followed to ensure successful delivery of the project.

“We have made our point very clear. We are engaging investors on the Ibom Deep Seaport. We just finished paying for the feasibility studies of that Seaport. It takes processes to get things done.”

He emphasised that steady progress is being made despite the complexity of the project.

“We are moving inch by inch on where we ought to be on the Ibom Deep Seaport and the power sector. Things don’t happen overnight, but we have good engagements, and people are showing interest.”

Governor Eno highlighted growing investor interest as a positive signal for both sectors and reaffirmed his administration’s development agenda:

“Our administration remains committed to strengthening the power sector and advancing the Ibom Deep Seaport project. These are critical investments that will unlock new opportunities and drive long-term development in our State.
