0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secondary Education Board, (SEB), says Staff Emolument Verification Exercise is another initiative the Board has embarked upon in order to verify Staff’s presence and credibility at their various Schools of primary assignment.

Director of the board, Sani Mohammed Ladan said the exercise is to ensure that staff remain committed and productive with improved Academic performance of the Students in the teaching and learning system.

Speaking at one of the verification centre at Government Secondary School, kagini,

Dr. Ladan, who led the management team on the verification exercise explained that, “this on the spot assessment verification is a valuable tool for background checks of staff both in the city and rural areas where the Senior Secondary Schools are located to avoid some lapses such as issues of Ghost workers who received monthly salaries and allowances but are not on ground physically to render the teaching services they have been employed for.”

In his visit to Schools in the Bwari Area Council, he said the verification procedures involve thorough checks of correct filling of the Emolument forms with particular attention to the Tax Identification number, National Housing Scheme Identification, Contributory Pension Pin number and Staff Attendance records for punctuality and efficiency on the Job.

He added that the verification exercise will help the Board to know the appropriate data of teaching and non-teaching Staff in Schools for proper planning and avoid wasteing resources, time and the wrong person on the teaching job as the teaching job is an organized profession with ethical values guiding its operations.

The Director revealed that Orientation exercise for both old and new Staff will soon commence to help them in the discharge of their duties.

He reminded the Staff of their responsibility as Teachers and role models, urging them to continue to add values to the teaching system by impacting positive knowledge and molding the Students in their custody for a brighter future.

He warned them against irresponsible attitudes or encouraging negative vices among the students as anyone caught will be sanctioned.

The Education Boss commended School Principals for their cooperation and the Verification Team who moved round the SEB Schools in the Six Area Councils to ensure its success assuring them of provision of necessary working tools for effectiveness and efficiency on the job.

In their various responses, the verified Staff said the Staff School verification exercise is a welcome development as it helps the Board to validate Staff records while the Staff also provide proof of their productivity at their various Schools.

They commended the Director for his leadership skills and effort towards protecting the reputation of the Board and building the Staff confidence promising to continue to put in their best on the Job.

The intensive Staff Emolument Verification Exercise which was carried out in all the 88 Senior Secondary Schools in FCT lasted for a week.

Ivorian Sacred drum in France to return home

0

An Ivorian drum seized by France during colonization is about to be returned to the Ivory Coast.

The sacred Djidji Ayokwe drum was used to communicate warning messages up to thirty kilometres around villages.

In 1916 the drum was confiscated by the French colonial administration and transferred to France in 1930.

The “talking drum”, as it was nick named, has been restored in a workshop near Paris under the supervision of the Quay Branly Museum.

“You can see that it has been quite badly affected by wood-eating insects which have dug galleries, certainly repeatedly, and that this has structurally weakened the drum”, said Nathalie Richard, head of the conservation-restoration department at the Quai Branly Museum.

“We consolidated the material, the wood itself, by impregnating it with a resin carried by a solvent. So the resin makes it possible to regain a slightly solid structure and to avoid small breakages on the edges, on the edges of the galleries, on the edges of the gaps, and so that vibrations and handling do not damage the drum any more”, concluded the head of conservation.

The drum is three metres long and weighs 430 kg, this wooden instrument is seen as carrying mystical properties and was used to warn of dangers, mobilise for war or summon villages to ceremonies or festivals.

It is the first of a list of 148 works that Ivory Coast officially requested the restitution to France in late 2018.

“The drum made it possible to transmit messages over long distances – up to 30 kilometres in all directions – to villages neighbouring the village of Adjamé where it was located and which were therefore interpreted by those who heard them through sound, since the Ebrié language is a tonal language”, said Hélène Joubert, head of the heritage unit of the Africa collections at the Quai Branly Museum.

This traditional object, long claimed by Abidjan, is a central piece of the musical art of the Ebriés, an ethnic group in Ivory Coast.

“This loss was extremely important psychologically, felt as a loss of identity and freedom. And to recover the drum is to recover one’s identity and freedom”, concluded the head of African collections.

The arrival of the Djidji Ayokwe at the Museum of Civilisation in Abidjan can only be confirmed once the French Parliament has voted on a law allowing its official return, similar to the restitution of historical pieces to Benin approved by the French parliament in December 2020.

Rwanda: Rights groups urge probe into journalist death

0

Dozens of rights and media groups urged Rwanda to conduct an independent and impartial probe into the death they see as “suspicious” of a top journalist who was critical of the government.

John Williams Ntwali, 44, editor of The Chronicles newspaper, was killed on 8th January when a speeding vehicle rammed a motorcycle on which he was riding pillion.

Ntwali, who had been arrested multiple times during his two-decade long career as a journalist, owned the Pax TV channel on YouTube, which had established itself as a rare outlet for critical reporting in Rwanda.

“Rwandan authorities should allow an independent, impartial and effective investigation, drawing on international expertise,” the 90 civil society organisations and media associations said a joint statement.

The groups regretted that “two weeks after the alleged accident, Rwandan authorities [had] failed to provide a police report, the exact location of the alleged accident, any photo or video evidence, or detailed information on the others involved.”

Asked about the investigation, Rwandan police spokesman John Bosco Kabera said “Ntwali’s accident case file was transmitted to the prosecution. We can no longer comment on it.”

The driver said to be involved in the incident that killed Ntwali is in custody.

Press freedom is often critcized in Rwanda where journalists critical of President Paul Kagame and his ruling party have been jailed, have disappeared or turned up dead throughout his nearly 30 years in power.

The eastern African nation ranks 136th out of 180 countries on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) press freedom index.

Earlier this month, government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo noted that eight Rwandans had died in motorbike taxi accidents this month alone.

“Groundless insinuations don’t help. Let the accident investigators do their work,” she said on Twitter.

The statement, which was issued by Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Ntwali had been regularly threatened and attacked in pro-government media for his investigative reporting.

He was one of only a few journalists in Rwanda independently covering high profile, politicised trials of journalists, commentators and opposition members, and posting videos about their conditions in prison, it said.

“Rwanda’s international partners should press the authorities to allow and cooperate fully with such an investigation,” said HRW.

The media rights group said: “Beaten down by decades of oppression, the Rwandan media landscape is one of the poorest in Africa.”

Actors Guild Re-Launches Health Insurance Scheme For Members

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in partnership with Medicard Health Management and Universal Insurance on Monday re-launched a health management and insurance scheme for its members.

READ MORE: Emeka Rollas re-elected as AGN president

The National President of AGN, Emeka Rollas, during the launch of the health insurance scheme in Lagos, emphasised the need for actors to take their health seriously.

“The issue of health and wellness of members is very key to this administration because health is the most important aspect of our life.

“There is nothing more important than health for any human being, this fact made us to introduce special retail health management scheme with Medicard Ltd., in the year 2020.

“We have so far enrolled some indigent members on the scheme through the support of the Chairman of the Board of National Patrons, Rt. Hon. Ned Nwoko in 2021 and ROK TV.

“We are relaunching this scheme for the benefit of our members.

“We are also in partnership with Universal Insurance, providing group on-set cover for members in cases of emergency,” he said.

Rollas in addition said that, other juicy welfare packages had also been put in place for members particularly that, it was so discouraging to note the apathy and lackadaisical attitude guild members had shown toward welfare packages including their health issues.

He said that in view of this, the guild had designed a week-long health and wellness sensitisation programme aimed at creating awareness to enable members enrol on the health management scheme and insurance policy.

He noted that, February 11, 2023 had been slated for a health walk and free medical check-up at Teslim Balogun Stadium from 7a.m. to 5p.m.

According to him, this will also feature health management and insurance renewals, lectures, healthy and complete diet tutorials.

“This is to help make healthy life style a priority,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Paulinus Offor, Executive Director, Technical, Universal Insurance, noted that, actors trully need to enrol in an insurance scheme, considering the occupational hazard they are consistently exposed to on movie locations.

“Coming on board will make you have access to compensations as you are exposed to hazards, so we are partnering with AGN for a long time,” he said.

Also, Mr Ezekiel Eseagwu, Executive Director, Medicard Nigeria, while explaining the modalities of the health management scheme, said each actor would be registered on the scheme at a subsidised fee.

Eseagwu noted that this would guide against the situation whereby actors continue to depend on public donations whenever they have health challenges.

“We are partnering with AGN to give actors the opportunity to come on board while we have subsidised the rate.

“You will have access to over 100 hospitals because we have considered the way you move from one location to the other,” he said.

IAR recommends dates for planting, seed varieties to farmers

0

The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has recommended late parts of May and early June as best period for cereals planting for moist savannah parts of Nigeria.

Prof. Mohammed Faguji, the Executive Director, (IAR), announced this during an interaction with newsmen on NIMET weather prediction for 2023 in Zaria on Tuesday.

According to him, the moist savannah part of the country lies along the southern part of Katsina, Zamfara and Kaduna States, and going towards the Federal Capital Territory.

“Planting of legumes such as groundnut and soya beans should follow almost immediately after planting the cereals, stressing that cowpea planting should start around July 22.”

He, however, added that cowpea should be planted in the early parts of July in places like Kano, Jigawa and northern part of Bauchi States.

Faguji described the NIMET’s prediction on the normal secession of the rainfall as a good news, because the rainy season would cease at the time we are used to.

“For example, the southern guinea savanna, such as the southern part of Kaduna state, rainfall ceases between Oct. 5 and 10, while in the drier part of the country rain ceases around Sept. 30

“The above picture will persist during this year’s wet season farming except for Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States where it was predicted that the rain will cease earlier than normal,’’ he said.

The executive director advised the state offices of Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) on the need to sensitise farmers on planting early maturing seed varieties.

He further advised the farmers to start looking for these varieties that are early maturing to feat for the early cessation of rainfall.

Faguji said the prediction from NIMET also indicated that there would be sporadic dry spells which do not follow any pattern except for Jigawa, Kano and Katsina states where the rain will completely cease.

He restated the commitment of the institute to double its efforts towards developing drought tolerant seed varieties; adding that the institute has developed maize and sorghum seed varieties that would withstand the period of dry spell.

He said the institute had already communicated to its stakeholders the characteristics of its different early maturing seed varieties and drought tolerant seed it developed.

He added that it was only good for them to put in an early request for the purchase of these seeds to enable them to prepare early.
