President Buhari Was’nt Stoned In Kano- Presidency

The Presidency has said that the report making the rounds about the purported stoning of President Muhammadu Buhari in Kano is laughable and untrue.

Presidential Spokesperson, Garba Shehu, while reacting to the report, via a statement he issued on Tuesday, said:

“We have seen fake reports of stone-pelting incident that took place at Hotoro area of Kano on the day of the visit to the city by President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, an incident, even if minor, that should stand condemned by all well-meaning citizens.

“Facts on ground as rendered by the law enforcement agencies speak of a clash between the local road transport authorities, the Kano Road Transport Authority, KAROTA and thugs hired by a yet-to-be identified group that took place when the President was being treated to a banquet at the Government House, well after he had finished his projects Inauguration,

The President was in the state to work the development, safety and security of the lives of common citizens and the happy thing about it was that the good people of Kano State were appreciative of him for the progress the state and the nation at large are making under him.”

Democratic dividend

Shehu said the President and his supporters were fully aware of the schemes of the opposition, who think they can distract the President.

He said the President was well focused on delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians.

“The divisive rhetoric of an opposition in a futile attempt to malign the image of the President and the candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the coming elections, and its desperate wedge-driving activities to cause a division between the party and the government is not what will give them victory.

“A so-called leading opposition party that controls 14 states, going into elections with eight or nine of the states in tow should look inwards to see why their campaign is flagging and destined to fail. Their defeat is a story foretold by many discerning individuals.

“The stone-pelters as seen from the video in the fight against the traffic police were innocent children sponsored by politicians and terrorist sympathizers. There is no place for violence in a democracy.

“The PDP should use the opportunity of the electioneering to put their point of view in a democracy. When problems can be resolved through talks, there is no place for stone-pelting, arson and unruly behavior as we are witnessing in some of the campaigns.

“It is equally unhealthy for society and it becomes the duty of political, social and religious leaders to correctly inform the misled youngsters to shun the path of violence which is inimical to their own future.

“Lastly, and worthy of note is to say that the President has not lost his command and respect in Kano. For those who hold the border closure against him, they must come to realise that the 60-70 integrated rice mills in the city today would not have been in place if he had allowed the free-for-all smuggling to continue,” he said.

Data Protection Bureau Investigates Banks For Data Breach Allegations

The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau has opened an investigation into allegations of data breach by two Nigerian Banks; Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc.

The Head, Legal Enforcement and Regulation, NDPB, Babatunde Bamigboye said this in a statement issued in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Bamigboye explained that these investigations were triggered by allegations of unlawful disclosure of banking records to a third party and unlawful access and processing of personal data.

According to the directive of the National Commissioner  NDPB, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, ”the investigation covers the data governance practice of the banks in all their branches in Nigeria and extends to all third parties carrying out data processing activities.”

The Bureau noted with concern that many data privacy and protection regulations and best practices are hardly implemented down the organisational strata of major data controllers in Nigeria.

Similarly, the Bureau enjoined organisations to heed the Nigerian Government circulars and general compliance notice, directing them to send the names of their Data Protection Officers/Contacts to the Bureau.

There are reports by Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System, NIBSS, which indicated that within 9 months of 2020, fraudsters attempted 46,126 attacks and they were successful in 41,979 occasion representing 91% of the time! This level of vulnerability to data breach is unacceptable and it can only be addressed through foolproof data security and data privacy measures by data controllers/data processors in the industry.

The National Commissioner enjoined ”all financial institution to emulate the example of the Central Bank of Nigeria in compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation, NDPR, 2019 and in creating a robust data governance system.”

Dr.Olatunji has urged ”organisations to take the National Privacy Week as  an opportunity  to set their records straight on how they handle the data of citizens. Enforcement measures will be taken against wilful violators of privacy rights forthwith.”

National Privacy week is set aside to create awareness of fundamental rights and freedoms relating to the privacy of citizens in the data processing ecosystem.

Mustapha who is the Turaki of Ilorin announced that he has begun seeking collaboration with Labour and Trade Unions, as well as their affiliate bodies, to improve workers welfare.

According to him, his constituents can always count on his support for the betterment of the union and he will always stand by the people fighting for the just cause of the good people of the Kwara Central.

He expressed these views at a workshop for members of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Practitioners in Ilorin.

Mustapha said ”he believes that labour union agitations are critical to the growth and development of the state.

“My presence at the workshop served as an avenue to have a firsthand information about the challenges confronting unionists with a view to proffering solutions when elected into the 10th senate.”

Mustapha, had previously led several job empowerment initiatives through his foundation, the Saliu Mustapha Foundation, and insisted that job creation for Kwara Central residents remained at the forefront of his candidacy.

“Employment opportunities and job creation are some of the most important legislative agenda I will be going to the Senate with,” he promised.

PDP’s Senatorial Candidate, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who also spoke at the workshop, said the Labour union was traditionally a non-democratic institution, but its members have abandoned their neutrality to become involved in active politics.

The Director General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Comrade Issa Aremu stated that contrary to popular belief, Labour Unions are neither political nor apolitical.

Aremu said that members of the Union, like every other Nigerian, have a lawful right to vote and be voted for.

According to him, members owe it to their country to vote in elections and participate actively in politics.

“They are meant to have a voice of their own… You have to learn from Mallam Saliu Mustapha who is very modest,” he added.
