0

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Board of Trustees and CGIAR have appointed Dr Simeon Ehui as the 8th Director General for IITA and Regional Director for Continental Africa for CGIAR.

In a statement made available by IITA, Ehui is expected to build on IITA and CGIAR’s proven track record of impact, working with teams and partners to improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resources across Africa.

Ehui, a national of Côte d’Ivoire who has over 30 years experience in agriculture and sustainable development, joined IITA from the World Bank where he was Regional Director for Sustainable Development, providing vision, coherence, and focus for sustainable development in West and Central Africa.

He said: “I am delighted to take up the role of IITA Director General and Regional Director, Continental Africa at CGIAR. Critical scientific research is essential at a time when poverty, hunger, and climate and biodiversity crises are escalating. Africa needs to enhance its potential to feed itself and make its food systems more resilient to climate change.

“I see myself as a broker across research-for-development among scientists, policy-makers and economists and linking science with programme implementation at the global, regional, and national levels,” Ehui asserted.

The Chair of IITA’s Board of Trustees, Christian Borgemeister, who expressed pleasure at welcoming Dr Ehui as DG, IITA and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, noted that with his expertise and track record, Ehui was well positioned to be a transformative leader who would guide IITA and CGIAR in Africa into the future, also conveying appreciation to Dr Nteranya Sanginga for his tremendous commitment to IITA over the past 11 years.

Borgemeister stated, “He brings to these roles a passion for IITA’s mission, proven leadership, and deep experience facilitating high-level policy discussions, cultivating major partnerships, and steering transformational projects.”

The Executive Managing Director, CGIAR, Claudia Sadoff, noted that Africa is central to efforts to achieve global food and nutrition security, and therefore critical to CGIAR’s mission to transform food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis.

Sadoff said, “Early in his career, Dr Ehui worked at CGIAR and we are delighted that this distinguished alumnus is returning to help advance those goals and build impactful partnerships across the Continent.”

The statement says, Ehui, who is expected to report to the IITA Board of Trustees and the CGIAR Executive Management Team, would act as a counterpart to key continent-wide institutions and lead a step-change in the level, relevance, and depth of CGIAR’s presence in Africa.

According to the statement, as set out in the Abidjan II communiqué, CGIAR signed an important agreement with the African Development Bank, the African Union Commission and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa in 2022, aligning efforts to boost food and nutrition security on the African continent and Dr Ehui would be a member of CGIAR’s Senior Leadership Team, which helps guide the global partnership.

The statement discloses that Dr Ehui’s appointment is effective August 1, 2023, saying in the interim, IITA’s Deputy Director General and Director for Research for Development (R4D), Dr Bernard Vanlauwe, would serve as Director General.

Dr. Ehui takes over the role from Dr Nteranya Sanginga, who is retiring after 11 years of outstanding leadership, the statement reveals.

Experts Emphasise On Relevance of Health Promotion and Education

0

Health Experts and stakeholders have reiterated the importance of Health Promotion and Education (HPE) to human existence.

They said; “HPE keeps people informed about their health and well-being, so they could live a life free of diseases.”

The Health Promotion experts stated this in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during the Annual General Meeting of the Health Promotion and Education Alumni Association College of Medicine (HPEAAICM), University of Ibadan.

Affirming that prevention is better than cure, they emphasised the need for Health Promotion and Education (HPE) to ensure people do things that would keep them healthy and live a long life without diseases.

They stressed the need to push out correct and appropriate information for people to keep themselves healthy and protected.

As a member of the HPEAAICM, the wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, a cancer survivor, affirmed that creating awareness about diseases such as cancer was imperative and required funds, as public education, patient support, advocacy and research need to be in place to make cancer a health priority.

“When I got to Ondo State, there wasn’t anything about cancer under the ministry budget. We followed the advocacy up seriously and we got the ministry to create a budget line because if they don’t have a budget line, where are they going to get money?

“That was one of the things we were able to achieve in Ondo State. We made sure that the state Assembly approved the budget for cancer and that has even snowballed into something much greater and bigger because before my husband’s tenure ends, we are bent on presenting a cancer treatment centre for Ondo State people.”

Also, the president of HPEAAICM, Dr Bright Orji, asserted that although HPE was workable in Nigeria it was challenging, as the number of trained professionals and practitioners at the local, state and federal levels was not enough, saying there was also the need to ensure the use of available channels to reach the local communities so that people would get enough relevant and needed information.

He disclosed that apart from bringing professionals together to learn, the association was also making sure that the policies made by the government were interpreted in the local languages that people would understand and appropriately ensure that it was being practised as the government had allocated.

“We are involved in policy-making, working with the government to ensure that appropriate measures are being taken and put in place to help drive this process. For example, when the bill on the regulation of health promotion was introduced, we worked with so many other associations to make sure it was all-inclusive.”

Similarly, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Olabode Ladipo, recalled that during the Covid-19 period, there was so much information that was not scientifically based, saying it would be beneficial for people to be given the right information concerning their health.

Ladipo, therefore sought the cooperation of the association, being health communication specialists, to come to the fore to be able to serve as mediation in terms of the kind of health-related publications that get to the public.

On his part, the President, of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (Worldwide), Prof. Emmanuel Otolorin, called on alumni associations to give back to society and support universities, as done in other countries, noting that the expectation that government could fund all the universities in the country to the desired level was not realistic.

“Worldwide, some of the best universities like Yale, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, are partially supported by their alumni. That is why at this time when the government is unable to appropriately fund medical education in the country, we are talking to ourselves to step into meet some critical needs.”

The high point of the event was the association’s first induction for over 140 members, including Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the conferment of awards and the launching of the HPEAAICM website.

Kwara gets World Bank funding to boost primary healthcare

0

Kwara State, North Central Nigeria has secured a World Bank funding to support infrastructure upgrade in at least one primary healthcare facility in each of the 193 wards of the state.

This is another breakthrough of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s constant payment of counterpart funds for different healthcare services. The Governor will formally launch the programme on Monday 23rd January, where cheques will be presented to the benefitting PHCs across the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Health Care Development Agency, Dr Nusirat Elelu said in a statement that the N887,800,000 support comes under the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) project, for which the government has paid a counterpart fund.

“In the pursuance of Universal Health coverage for the people of kwara and repositioning the Primary HealthCare system to be able to meet the demands of all and sundry, the Kwara State Government along with 13 other states have secured a facility to strengthen Primary Health Care centres across the state.”

According to the statement, this support is coming through the World Bank assisted- IMPACT project through a Decentralised Facility Financing (DFF), with an initial disbursement of Investment fund to one Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) in each of the 193 geopolitical wards in Kwara State.

This initial investment fund the statement added is meant to support the PHCs to achieve an ideal level 2 Primary HealthCare centre, that has the capacity to provide the basic minimum package of health services.

She explained further that the utilisation of these funds will be governed by a work plan developed by the health facility staff in conjunction with the Ward Development Committee, to be approved by the Kwara State Primary HealthCare Development Agency.

Elelu disclosed that this plan will take care of basic needs in the health centre, such as infrastructural upgrades, equipment, drugs, consumables, clean water sources and security, based on identified needs.

“Furthermore, through the DFF mechanism, operational funds will subsequently be transferred quarterly to these 193 PHCs to meet the day-to-day running of the benefitting health centres. The quarterly operational fund will be jointly administered by both the Ward Development Committee Chairmen and the Officer in charge of the PHCs to foster transparency and accountability.”

She announced that oversight will also be jointly provided by the National Primary HealthCare Development Agency, State Primary HealthCare Development Agency, LGA Health Authority and the World Bank.

Elelu stated that prior to the receipt of this support from the World Bank, the State Governor, expressed interest in getting the support for Primary HealthCare Centres in the State and paid the required counterpart fund for the state to be eligible. With this support, she said health centres will improve in infrastructure and quality-of-service delivery.

The fund the Executive Secretary added will go a long way in reducing under five and maternal morbidity and mortality in the state and help to rapidly improve coverage of key maternal and child health interventions and welcomed the people of kwara to a new era of improved Primary Health Care services.

Cameroonian journalist dies after abduction

0

The mutilated body of a prominent Cameroonian journalist was found on Sunday near the capital Yaounde five days after he was abducted by unidentified assailants, the press union and a colleague said.

Media advocates described Martinez Zogo’s disappearance and death as a further sign of the perils of reporting in the African country.

Zogo, the director of private radio station Amplitude FM, was kidnapped on 17th January by unknown assailants after trying to enter a police station to escape his attackers, media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said.

Zogo had recently been talking on air about a case of alleged embezzlement involving a media outlet with government connections, RSF said.

“Cameroonian media has just lost one of its members, a victim of hatred and barbarism,” Cameroon’s journalists’ trade union said in a statement. “Where is the freedom of the press, freedom of opinion and freedom of expression in Cameroon when working in the media now entails a mortal risk?”

His colleague, Charlie Amie Tchouemou, editor-in-chief of Amplitude FM, confirmed Zogo’s death and his abduction.

The police and the government did not respond to calls for comment.

The incident is the latest in a string of attacks against journalists in Cameroon, which has a vibrant press and which is ruled by President Paul Biya, who has a decades-long record of repressing opposition.

Cameroon is one of many countries across the continent, from Burkina Faso to Ethiopia to Equatorial Guinea, where journalists complain that media freedoms are under threat from authoritarian governments.

“Although Cameroon has one of the richest media landscapes in Africa, it is one of the continent’s most dangerous countries for journalists, who operate in a hostile and precarious environment,” RSF says in its Cameroon country profile.

Radio France Internationale reporter Ahmed Abba was arrested in July 2015 and imprisoned for two years on terrorism charges that rights groups denounced as a sham.

Outspoken reporter Paul Chouta, who worked for private news website Cameroon Web, was beaten and stabbed by unknown attackers in 2019.

African laboratories train rats to detect tuberculosis

0

In laboratories in Tanzania and Nairobi, rats have been trained to sniff out tuberculosis.

Already known for finding land mines, the rodents could now transform the way the disease is detected.

The African giant pouched rats work with scientists at the APOPO Project, a Belgian non-profit organisation in Tanzania, because they can detect the smell of the deadly disease.

A study conducted by APOPO in 2016 compared the accuracy of the rats to that of standard methods used in laboratories such as smear microscopy, bacteria culture tests and Genexpert a rapid test for tuberculosis.

Joseph Soka, programme manager for TB at APOPO, said: “The sensitivity of these rats is as high as compared to microscopes and as compared to other tests, their sensitivity is independent of HIV status.  That is, they can easily identify tuberculosis in people living with HIV, keeping in mind that these people living with HIV, it is very difficult to be diagnosed by the standard test, including Genexpert in microscopes.”

APOPO is already known for training rats to find landmines but training them to detect TB was new territory when they adopted the programme back in 2008.

Now the animals work in 21 medical centres in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam as they are thought to be faster at detecting the illness than standard methods.

Many developing countries heavily rely on old TB detection techniques that entail the use of microscopes to examine the sputum of potentially infected patients.

Dhaval Shah, veterinary pathologist at Pathologists Lancet Kenya, said rats can speed up the process.

“So, the conventional laboratory techniques can take anywhere from two hours to even 14 days per sample, depending on what technique you use,” he said. “While the rats will be able to complete testing of fifty samples within two hours and this would be ideal in far places or remote places like Mozambique or places in Mozambique which are rural.”

According to the WHO, TB claimed the lives of 1.6 million people in 2021 including 187 000 people with HIV.

The disease is the 13th leading cause of death globally and the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19.

The WHO estimates that in 2018, 162,000 people (551 cases per 100,000 people) contracted tuberculosis in Mozambique.

The figures highlight the need for a speedy, reliable and affordable technique to detect the TB causing bacteria.

It is hoped that the use of rats might do away with the need for time-consuming microscope testing.

First female pastor ordained in Holy Land

0

On Sunday, a Palestinian from Jerusalem, Sally Azar, became its first woman pastor at an event at the Lutheran church in the heart of the Old City, attended by hundreds of international well-wishers.

“I got more excited seeing the excitement of other people. It’s an indescribable feeling to take this step with the church’s support. I hope that many girls and women will know this is possible and that other women in other churches will join us. I know it will take a long time, but I think it could be exciting if this change in Palestine,” Reverend Azar stated.

Christians are a minority in the Palestinian Territories, Israel, and Jordan. Most Christians here belong to the Greek Orthodox and Latin Catholic Churches, which do not allow women priests. However, the ordination of women has been taking place in many Protestant Churches in the past few decades. These small local congregations run schools and hospitals in the Holy Land.

“Everywhere where you have a patriarchal society and culture, this is a major step. Since I’ve been ordained for over 40 years, I’ve met many people who didn’t think it was possible. But now they’ve seen women actually serving as pastors, as bishops, as archbishops, we know it works, and we know that it’s actually in accord with the Bible,” says the recently retired Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Antje Jackelen.

In the Middle East, churches in Lebanon and Syria have already conferred holy orders on women, while at least one Palestinian woman is known to serve in the US.

Her father Bishop Sani Azar, ordained ms Azar. She insists that while his example inspired her, she never felt pressured into studying theology. “It’s what I wanted, what I was called to do,” she says. As a pastor, she will perform different duties, including leading services and bible studies in Jerusalem and Beit Sahour, in the occupied West Bank, for English-speaking congregations.

“It’s a big, big day for the life of our Church, it’s an important step forward, and it’s overdue,” comments Reverend Dr. Munther Isaac, Lutheran Pastor of Bethlehem and Beit Sahour. He says he looks forward to introducing Reverend Azar as a role model at local Lutheran schools – which teach children who are Christians of all traditions and Muslims. Rev Dr. Isaac has written a book in Arabic about women’s leadership in the Bible and to support women’s ordination.

“We accept women ministers, we carry women professors, we get to go in surgery performed by women, and it’s strange that we still have to argue that women can teach the Bible or perform the sacraments. This tells me that despite the progress we’ve made as Palestinians in empowering women and women rights, that there is still work to be done,” he says.

Supporters of Rev Azar believe she is the right person to challenge stereotypes and break the mold.
