At a news conference in Wellington after the decision, Hipkins said, “Earlier today the Labour party caucus, the Labour team of MPs unanimously endorsed me as their new leader and as the next prime minister of New Zealand. I want to acknowledge the outgoing prime minister, my very good friend Jacinda Ardern. She’s been one of New Zealand’s great prime ministers.”

Ardern said she would be stepping down from the country’s top job in a surprise announcement last Thursday, citing exhaustion. She is yet to formally resign as prime minister to New Zealand’s Governor General – a step needed to make the decision official.

Speaking at a news conference Thursday, Ardern said her term would end by February 7, when she expected a new Labour prime minister would be sworn in – though “depending on the process that could be earlier.

Hipkins said he expects to be sworn in on Wednesday. A career politician who entered Parliament in 2008, Hipkins became a household name while leading New Zealand’s pandemic management as Covid-19 response minister in Ardern’s cabinet. Aside from being education minister, he is also minister for police and the public service, and Leader of the House.

Speaking to reporters after nominations closed Saturday morning, Hipkins committed to leading the country in a “strong, stable and unified” way but cautioned there were challenges ahead.

I acknowledge that at the moment, we’re going through some economic turbulence and we’re going to have to navigate our way through there,” he said.

Hipkins also told reporters that he is incredibly optimistic about New Zealand’s future and is really looking forward to the job. I am feeling energized and enthusiastic.

Stakeholders Warn Farmers Against Bush Burning

0

Stakeholders in Ogun State, have issued a warning to farmers in the region against the practice of bush burning.

The warning is as a result of the recent fire incident that razed farm plantations, with losses running into several millions of naira.

The recent occurrence happened last week in a mysterious fire breakout which destroyed a 10-hectare oil palm plantation around Onipepeye, along Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu expressway, in Obafemi-Owode Local Council, Ogun State.

The farm, owned by the former Nigeria Ambassador to Zambia/Malawi, and one-time Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state, Barr. Folake-Marcus-Bello recorded the loss of several millions of naira, as over 500 palm trees, among others farm produce ready for harvest were destroyed.

The head of Farmers (Baale Agbe) in Imeko area, Ogun State, Chief Abdulazeez Ismail Abolore, who disclosed that quite a number of such incidents were recorded last year, warned farmers to desist from such practice.

“We have started the campaign in our area, warning farmers, hunters and youths from engaging in indiscriminate bush burning. Most times the fire goes out of control, destroying crops and other valuables.

“We have also tutored farmers to ensure that the borderline of their farms are weeded, so that in the case of any unforeseen fire outbreak, it will be difficult for the farm to catch fire.”

More classified documents seen at Biden’s residence – Investigators

0

The U.S Department of Justice (DoJ) investigators revealed that six more classified documents were seen during a 13-hour search of President Joe Biden’s residence in Delaware. Mr Biden lawyer said,

This was confirmed by President Biden’s lawyer Bob Bauer who added that Some documents seized at the Wilmington property were from his time as a senator and others from his tenure as vice-president under Barack Obama.

Bauer said “personally handwritten notes and surrounding materials were also taken away. Meanwhile Mr Biden and his wife were not at home but  he granted access to his home to allow DoJ to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice-presidential records and potential classified material,” Mr Bauer said in a statement on Saturday.

Earlier this month Mr Biden’s lawyers said a first batch of classified documents had been found on 2 November at the Penn Biden Center, a think-tank the president founded in Washington DC.

A second batch of records was found on 20 December in the garage at his Wilmington home, while another document was found in a storage space at the house on 12 January, his lawyers said.

After finding the documents, the president said his team immediately turned them over to the National Archives and the Justice Department. It is not clear why Mr Biden had kept them.

Under the Presidential Records Act, White House records are supposed to go to the National Archives once an administration ends, where they can be stored securely. A special counsel, Robert Hur, has been appointed to lead the investigation into how the sensitive documents were handled. The lengthy search and subsequent discovery of more documents is a political headache for the president, as he prepares to declare whether he will run for a second term in 2024.

Mr Biden and his wife, Jill, are spending the weekend in the coastal town of Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, where they own another house. It was searched earlier this month and no documents were found, his lawyers said, according to the New York Times.

The two-month gap between the first Biden discovery – days before the midterm elections – and the news being made public in January raises awkward questions for the president about transparency, BBC North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher says.

Mr Biden’s team insists the president has co-operated fully with the DoJ inquiry. Mr Biden has played down the affair as an oversight, saying he has “no regrets” about not publicly disclosing the discovery of some classified files before the November midterm elections.

The discovery comes as former US President Donald Trump also faces a probe over his alleged mishandling of hundreds of classified documents at his Florida Mar-a-Lago residence and his alleged failure to comply with a subpoena. Mr Trump and his lawyers resisted handing over the documents until the FBI raided his Florida holiday home last August. He alleges that President Biden is being treated more favourably by the FBI.

She fought back to level the scores by the fourth game, but Rybakina would break again, clinically punishing the Pole’s second serve to take the opening set.

Swiatek looked to have recovered after she rattled off three straight games at the start of the second set behind a more aggressive forehand, only for Rybakina to haul herself level with another break of serve.

Rybakina broke Swiatek again at 4-4 in the second set before holding her own serve in convincing fashion to close out the match.

“It was a really tough match and I really respect Iga because of the strike she has and the Grand Slams,” Rybakina said after the match.

“She’s a young player and she plays really well. Today I think was serving also good, just struggling on one side. Then in the important moments I played really well and it made a difference.”

The Kazakhstani player’s win sees her progress to a third Grand Slam quarter-final having also reached the last eight at the 2021 French Open, before winning Wimbledon last year.
