The Sokoto State Police Command says it has made significant progress in tackling crime, including armed banditry, illegal arms possession and terrorism financing.

The command reiterated its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property, preventing and detecting crime, and maintaining law and order.

It added that it is implementing directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, focusing on professionalism, discipline and targeted enforcement operations against criminal hideouts.

The Police said armed bandits attacked Kwarengamba and Gayya da Kwari villages in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area, near the Niger border, in the early hours of April 8, 2026. Security forces, including police tactical teams, the military and local vigilantes, were deployed to the area.

According to the command, the attackers were overpowered after a gun battle and fled with injuries into nearby bush areas. Officers later recovered a sack containing 167 rounds of live ammunition, which has been registered as evidence.

On April 15, police carried out coordinated raids on suspected criminal hideouts in Tambuwal, Kware and Goronyo local government areas.

Three suspects were arrested: Isiya Yusuf from Goronyo, Dankulu Sani from Tambuwal, and Yushau Abubakar from Kware.

“Items recovered include seven locally made Dane guns, an AK-47 magazine, a military uniform, cutlasses, as well as drugs and dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. The suspects have been charged in court.”

The police also arrested a suspected bandit informant and terrorism financier on April 17.

“The suspect, Aminu Mai Roba, was intercepted along the Ruwa Wuri–Tangaza road with four cows.”

According to police, he confessed to receiving the animals from the Lakurawa group and was tasked with selling them and returning the proceeds.

“The animals have been seized as evidence, and investigations are ongoing.”

The Sokoto State Police Command said it remains proactive and determined to tackle all forms of criminal activities and urged residents to remain vigilant and share credible information, assuring them that all reports will be treated confidentially.

“Public cooperation remains essential to maintaining peace, stability and security across the state.”
