The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has commenced the distribution of teaching and learning materials to public basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in a move to strengthen classroom delivery and improve learning outcomes.

The materials are being distributed in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board(FCT UBEB) as part of a nationwide intervention to enhance access to quality education.

Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to building an inclusive and effective education system.

“This initiative seeks to ensure that every Nigerian child receives quality education.

“It is also to empower them with teaching and learning materials to improve learning outcomes as well as their experience in the classroom, to be able to compete globally,”she said.

Garba described education as the foundation of national development, noting that the intervention reflects sustained collaboration between UBEC and state education boards to improve infrastructure, teacher capacity and access to learning resources.

She disclosed that more than 10,000 classrooms had been constructed nationwide under UBEC interventions, while over 500 teachers had benefited from capacity-building programmes.

According to her, more than 400,000 teaching and learning materials and over seven million core textbooks have been distributed across the country to enhance literacy and classroom engagement.

“Working together with our partners, particularly at the grassroots level, we have brought back 700,000 out-of-school children into classrooms. This is a big milestone,” Garba said.

She added that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises the Nigerian child.

Garba further revealed that over 100,000 Qur’anic learning materials had been distributed to support out-of-school children, particularly those in Tsangaya education systems.

She said the FCT received substantial instructional materials, including more than 137 core textbooks, over 7,000 packs of pencils and exercise books, and more than 40 interactive smart boards.

She added that over 30 desktop computers, school bags, shoes and other instructional materials were also provided to support effective teaching and learning.

The UBEC Executive Secretary noted that the materials represent critical tools for strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy among pupils.

She commended the FCT Administration for sustained investment in improving school infrastructure and learning environments.

Earlier, the Mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, said the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was advancing the administration’s education agenda in the territory.

He disclosed that the minister had awarded the rehabilitation and renovation of 108 schools, with a significant number already completed.

In her remarks, Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, Florence Wenegieme, said the distribution would strengthen teaching and learning in public basic schools.

“The materials being distributed today aim to enhance the teaching and learning process, and we encourage their effective use,” she said.

Wenegieme thanked UBEC for its continued support in improving the quality of education in the FCT.

Also speaking, the Emir of Jiwa, Idris Musa, commended UBEC for the intervention and cautioned against the diversion of the materials.
