Certificate Forgery: Supreme Court dismisses suit against Edo Governor
Peter Bahago, Abuja
The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki on the grounds that it failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
It will be recalled that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital earlier dismissed the alleged University of Ibadan degree certificate forgery suit filed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, against the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.
Not satisfied with the position of the appellate Court, the APC proceeded to the Supreme Court to challenge the judgement.
Delivering judgement in the appeal, Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Supreme Court agreed with the lower courts that the APC did not meet sufficient requirement to prove their case, hence the judge dismissed the appeal.
According to the court, the APC ought to have provided a disclaimer from the University of Ibadan that the certificate issued to Mr Obaseki was fake.
The apex court, consequently awarded N1 million naira in favour of the Edo State Governor.
