NALDA’s farm to Boost Meat, Milk production, Youth Empowerment

0

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), has established an animal husbandry farm with cow milking parlour in Sokoto State, North West Nigeria to boost youth empowerment.

The Executive Secretary, NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne, while speaking with newsmen after the inspection of the animal husbandry farm and the poultry feed mill facility, said he was satisfied with the level of work at the facilities.

He explained that the essence of establishing the modern farm, was based on Mr. President’s directive, in line with NALDA’s mandate.

The 100 hectares farm is built to sustain itself and aims at boosting milk production and reducing the movement of Cow within the area.

The farm is located at Dabagin-lafia, opposite the Usman Danfodio University farm, while the poultry feed mill is situated in Dayin village along the road to Doba, in Sokoto State.

The farm boast of Cow pens with capacity of 500 cows, cow milking parlour with capacity of 200 cows in a set, napier grass on 50 hectares, with the construction of clinics/veterinary sections and a training centre,

Ikonne said, that NALDA was committed to achieving food security and development, as he assured that the farm would generate employment, produce hygienic milk and fattened Cow for meat.

According to the NALDA boss, the farm would also train and encourage young farmers to go into animal husbandry farming and animal food formulation.

“NALDA is into partnership with Prime Ranch Ltd, who donated the 100 hectares of land where we are establishing the animal husbandry farm, napier grass field and will cultivate maize and millet on 30 hectares of the said land,” Ikonne stated.

“The establishment of the napier grass field is to ensure feed production for the cows, as that will eliminate the roaming around of the animals in search of feed, thereby curtailing farmer/herder clash.

“The milking parlour will serve both the cows in the farm and other animal husbandry farmers who would want their cows milked in a hygienic way,” he added.

On the management of the farm the NALDA Boss said Prime Ranch will manage the farm on completion based on their wealth of experience in animal husbandry, the partnership he said is sustainable, productive and should be encouraged in order for Nigeria to achieve food security and development

Ikonne further stated that with the establishment of the poultry feed mill, which Prime Ranch provided the land and was managing the 62,000 poultry capacity, there would be feed production for small farmers across the zone and other parts of the country.

“The employment chain will not be anything less that 400, consisting of workers who would be directly involved in these activities, outside the output, which is achieving food sufficiency,” he stated.

Also speaking during inspection of the projects, the Founder, Prime Ranch Ltd, Nafiu Yakubu, said the partnership with NALDA was coming into fruition.

“The thinking when we incorporated Prime Ranch years back, is to have a ranch kind of arrangement whereby we grow our animals, grow their feeds, fatten them, and sell them off to the market. The partnership with NALDA is a very cordial one. They support us in all areas that we need support from them.”

On the output from the partnership, Yakubu said, “Arising from this partnership with NALDA, you have seen the feed mill. We are currently producing feed for our poultry and other NALDA poultry farmers.”

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for encouraging young farmers through NADLA, stressing that the President had called Nigerians to return to farming, as he urged Nigerian youths to yield to the call.

“I am a lawyer and I am back to the farm, so Nigerian youths should go back to farming. It is very profitable and the opportunities are very wide,” Yakubu stated.

During the inspection, construction workers were spotted at the 100 hectares farmland at the section of the clinic and training centre building where work was ongoing, while the 500 cow capacity pens and the cow milking parlour have both been completed.

Also spotted were those watering the napier grass field using the boreholes provided by NALDA at the farm.

NAFDAC set to reinforce fight against substandard drugs

0
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is set to reinforce the fight against substandard and falsified drugs in the country with the implementation of pharmaceutical traceability strategy to safeguard the health of the Nigerian populace. The Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this at a workshop in Portharcourt, Rivers state organized by the agency  while  finalizing the draft traceability of pharmaceutical products regulations. This is contained in a statement signed by the NAFDAC spokesperson, Mr Olusayo Akintola in Abuja.

“The task of safeguarding the health of the nation is daunting in the face of the chaotic drug distribution system currently existing in Nigeria”. Adeyeye said. She said  that the falsification and diversion of health commodities caused serious health and economic consequences.“The consequences vis-à-vis the mandate of the agency to regulate and control among other things, the distribution of drugs and other regulated products is sufficient motivation for the  implementation of  pharmaceutical traceability,” she added.

The director-general emphasized on the need to complement the fight against the menace of substandard and falsified medicines and improve the regulatory control of the medicines supply chain in Nigeria noting that NAFDAC was committed to the full implementation of pharmaceutical traceability in Nigeria as part of  regulatory strengthening and underscoring  its mandate. Adeyeye also said that NAFDAC has developed a five-Year traceability implementation plan in line with the objectives of the Nigeria pharmaceutical traceability strategy.
She also said  the idea is aimed at achieving supply chain visibility and strengthening  interventions against  substandard and falsified medicines by the end of her second term.

”Gazetting and dissemination of the traceability of pharmaceutical products and  regulations is  essential for the adoption and enforcement of the provisions of the Nigeria pharmaceutical traceability strategy… Also, regulation, accompanied by guidelines and compliance requirements will provide a legal framework to support advocacy for all stakeholders to implement traceability in distribution of pharmaceuticals or supply chain. The participation of relevant stakeholders during the drafting of the traceability regulation is  important to ensure there is understanding among stakeholders,” she said.

She said that a major achievement in the direction of reducing the incidence of substandard and falsified medicines in the country was the hosting of the second Africa GSI traceability conference on healthcare in Lagos in Sept. 2019. The conference, according to her  attracted medicines regulatory agencies from about twenty-five countries in Africa, as well as other stakeholder partners from the Americas and Europe. “The agency is already on a five-year roadmap to establishing a culture of track and trace with regards to pharmaceutical products,” she said. Adeyeye said that medicines and medical devices can be monitored throughout the supply chain from manufacturing to the end user, the patient, adding that the agency has developed a roadmap to this effect.

She also stated that the roadmap has been approved by the Minister of Health, adding that, the traceability strategy document was the outcome of the year’ (1919/2020) work by NAFDAC further stating that the traceability document work was done in collaboration with the  Ministry of Health, USAID and GS1 Technologies. Adeyeye said that NAFDAC traceability office is being supported by international partners such as USAID, World Bank, World Health Organisation; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Global Fund.
Describing the gains of implementing pharmaceutical traceability as enormous, Adeyeye said traceability would provide visibility of medicines from plant to patient to promote trust in the pharmaceutical sector and healthcare system.

Reconsider rule on not exporting weapons to conflict zones – NATO

0

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday asked South Korea to reconsider its rule on not exporting weapons to countries in conflict so it could help arm Ukraine in repelling Russia’s invasion.

“I urge the Republic of Korea to continue and to step up the specific issue of military support,” he said in a question-and-answered session after a speech to the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies in Seoul.

“Several NATO allies who had as a policy never to export weapons to countries in conflict have changed that policy now,” Stoltenberg said, citing Germany, Norway, and NATO applicant Sweden as those which have changed their arms export policies to help Ukraine.

“After the brutal invasion of Ukraine, these countries changed their policy because they realized that when you are facing a brutal attack where an immense power – Russia – invades another one blatantly, as we have seen in Ukraine, if we believe in freedom, if we believe in democracy, if we don’t want autocracy and tyranny to win, then they need weapons.

“When the full-fledged invasion happened last year, many countries changed their policy because they realized that the only way to stand up for democracy, to help Ukraine prevail, and to create the conditions for a lasting peace was to deliver military support.”

Military aid for Ukraine received a big boost last week when Germany said it would send 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv while permitting other countries that possess the Leopards, including Norway, to supply them. The Leopard 2 is an agile and quick next-generation tank, despite being equipped with advanced protective armor and long-range firepower. It is considered among the best in the world and superior to anything Russia has deployed in Ukraine.

In addition to the Leopards, Ukraine is set to receive heavy armor from the United States, sending 31 M1 Abrams tanks, and the United Kingdom, which has pledged 14 Challenger tanks. Some experts say the South Korean K2 Panther is also in that group of top tanks and could be helpful in Ukraine.

But a South Korean presidential decree that enforces the country’s Foreign Trade Act says its exports can only be used for “peaceful purposes” and “shall not affect international peace, safety maintenance, and national security.”

South Korea is also a signatory to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, ratified in 2014 to keep close control on who gets weapons and under what conditions they can be used. But that doesn’t mean South Korea’s arms industry isn’t seeing a role in Ukraine’s war with Russia.

In December, a US defense official told CNN that Washington intends to buy 100,000 artillery ammunition from South Korean arms manufacturers to provide to Ukraine. The rounds will be transferred to Ukraine via the US, allowing Seoul to stick to its public pledge not to send lethal aid to the war-torn country.

And one of Ukraine’s most significant military supporters – Poland – signed a primary weapons deal with South Korea last year for hundreds of tanks, howitzers, and dozens of fighter jets. The sale will enable Poland to replace many weapons that Warsaw has sent to Kyiv. Stoltenberg said Monday that democracies must stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes for Kyiv to win the war.

“Because if if [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin wins, the message to him and other authoritarian leaders will be that they can get what they want with the use of force. This would make the world more dangerous and us more vulnerable,” he said.

Tunisian opposition urges unity after low election turnout

0

Official results after voting ended in Tunisia, on 29th January, highlighted that just 11.3 percent of voters had taken part in the poll.

The country’s main opposition coalition which includes the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha urged a united front against president Kais Saied.

“I call on all those who are part of the political movement and those who are in the civil movement to rise to this new challenge (ahead of us). Let’s join hands to work for change, in the form of Kais Saied’s departure,” Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, head of the National Salvation Front.

“Almost 90 percent, or rather 89 percent, of Tunisian voters ignored this farce and refused to be involved in this coup d’état scenario that does not represent them at all,” he exclaimed.

The latest poll was seen as the final pillar of Saied’s transformation of politics after he had the Constitution rewritten to give more power to the president.

Sunday’s poor participation follows a similar turnout in December’s first-round.

Speaking after voting ended at 5:00 pm GMT, electoral board chief Farouk Bouasker said 887,638 out of more than 7.8 million registered voters had taken part in the poll, which followed December’s widely boycotted first round.

Tunisians were divided over the poll.

Mohamed Abidi, 51, a waiter in Tunis, said there was “no way” he would vote.

“Saied isn’t listening to anyone to find solutions for our situation. The whole economy is suffering but he’s not interested he only wants to keep his place in the presidential palace,” he said.

But in the south-western town of Kasserine, Mokhtar Hermasi said he was doing his “electoral duty” despite a “bland campaign”.

The head of the polling station where he voted said numbers picked up throughout the day, and many of those casting ballots were older.

According to the electoral board’s initial figures, just five percent of those who voted were aged under 26, and more than two-thirds were men.

In Gafsa further south, Mohamed Tlijani and Ali Krimi said they had both voted for Tlijani’s cousin.

“The electoral process has become exhausting but we want him to win, we have the right to have a representative in parliament,” Krimi said.

Analysts had predicted a low second-round turnout, as major parties including Saied’s arch-rivals Ennahdha, urged another boycott.

Youssef Cherif, director of Columbia Global Centers in Tunis, said before Sunday’s poll that “this parliament will have very little legitimacy, and the president, who is all-powerful thanks to the 2022 constitution, will be able to control it as he sees fit”.

With inflation above 10 percent and repeated shortages of household basics, the North African country’s 12 million people have been focused on more immediate issues.

“The National Salvation Front coalition said it would not recognise the new parliament, calling for early presidential elections.”
