0

The Nigerian Government has launched its 2023 to 2027 master plans on Neglected Tropical Diseases, (NTDs) in the country. Launching the plans in Abuja during the 2023 World NTD day, the Minster of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire says Nigeria has reviewed its NTD Masterplan 2023–2027 and enjoins stakeholders to use the document as a guide for the attainment of the countries goals.

Dr Ehanire said Nigeria in its collective commitment to partnership for ownership of the strategic document has supported efforts of other disease endemic nations in contributing to the development of the “Kigali Declaration on NTDs. According to the Minister, the efforts are proves of it dedication to the WHO road map to end NTDs by 2030.

“Substantial progress has been made in the past decade, evidenced by the Guinea Worm Disease eradication in 2013, onchocerciasis transmission elimination in Plateau and Nasarawa States in 2019, with imminent prospects of Kaduna, Kebbi and Zamfara States being free of the disease soon, leaving us with fewer endemic states, and over 28 million persons no longer needing treatment”. He said.

Achievements On NTDs

Ehanire reeled out other achievements by the ministry of health these includes the epidemiological mapping of preventable NTDs in all the 774 LGAs, the ongoing Mass Administration of medicines in school-based and community de-worming programmes, the Mass Drug Administration for Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis and the 106 of 126 Trachoma endemic LGAs ending treatment and attaining elimination threshold, with 30 million persons, who were at risk of going blind from trachoma, reducing their risk to about 3.5 million.

Dr. Osagie further stated that the NTD Programme has managed 70% of 200,000 persons in the backlog for trachoma surgeries and the National Policy and Training Manuals on Snakebite management developed along with procurement of Anti-Snake venom (ASV) and Anti-rabies vaccines distributed to designated Health Facilities in all the 6 geopolitical zones in the country.

“I use this opportunity to thank our Development Partners (WHO, UNICEF) USAID, organised private sector, and NGDOs, for the support and contributions for NTDs elimination efforts. I call on Media and relevant MDAs to assist in raising awareness and supporting our quest to prevent NTDs in Nigeria”. He added.

Speaking during the lunch, the Minister of State for Health, Joseph Ekumankama, said that the efforts put in place by the government to deal with NTDs have started yielding results as the burden of the diseases is reducing drastically in some states.
“I am optimistic that with the rate at which the government is tackling this disease, the country would soon meet up with the global target of eliminating some of these diseases before the end of 2030”. He said.

WASH & NTDs Program

The Minister of State for Health reiterated that the NTDs program needed strong sector collaboration and good innovative practices, especially in areas of Water, and sanitation department Hygiene (WASH) practices while the case management component of NTDs needs to be effectively supported for implementation at all levels.
The National professional officer, Neglected Topical Disease, (NTD), World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Aliyu Suleiman said in 2022, Nigeria conducted an assessment for lymphatic filariasis in 200 LGAs out of 583 endemic LGAs.
“As of today, we have less than 300 LGAs needing assessment before stopping mass drug administration for this disease”. He said.

Suleiman added that the WHO is advocating for the NTD stakeholders and the country to Keep NTD services accessible through innovation, strengthen NTD integration, cross-sector collaborations and mainstreaming, for stronger country ownership and accountability and Invest sustainably in NTDs for the best returns.

We ask that Nigeria stay committed to the delivery on NTD road map 2021-2030 especially with the launch of the 2023-2027 master plans to address shortages of funds and medicines and foster partnerships.”

2023 NTD Day
The theme of the 2023 NTD Day is: “Act now. Act together. Invest in Neglected Tropical Diseases” and it supports efforts to keep 2030 targets on track with innovative and sustainable financing.
The NTD day also re-energizes the momentum to end the suffering from these 20 diseases, caused by a variety of pathogens, viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and toxins.
The significance of World NTD Day is to renew global and national awareness of the magnitude of NTDs and also present opportunities to highlight progress made, and challenges met in policy direction and advocate support for prevention, control, and elimination efforts.

The President also inaugurated the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)-funded 10MW Haske Solar Plant in a 24-hectare land in Kumbotso Local Government of Kano State.

The plant, which links industrial customers to an additional power supply, represents a significant step towards efforts to provide clean, reliable, and sustainable energy for all Nigerians.

The 10MW plant is the largest completed solar plant in Nigeria and the first under the NSIA renewable energy platform.

On the 10MW Haske Solar Plant, the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, described the solar plant as a significant achievement in Nigeria’s power generation, achieving the energy transition goal as well as increasing the share of renewable energy in the power mix.

The Minister revealed that the construction of the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant project is almost completed, while other power plant projects are at various stages of completion.

Family Homes Funds Estate

President Buhari also inaugurated the Family Homes Funds Estate, Darmanawa, Kano, which consists of 469 affordable housing units with ancillary infrastructure.

The inauguration is coming on the heels of the inauguration of the 2,600 Housing Estate on Potiskum road, Damaturu, Yobe State, a project executed by Family Homes in partnership with the Yobe State Government.

‘‘When I fly by helicopter, the number of high-rise buildings I see and the amount of development on the ground are fantastic. We thank God. We thank God. We thank God,’’ he said.

President Buhari urged the elites to encourage and inspire young people to embrace education, saying whether we like it or not we are going to leave the country for them.

‘‘They must embrace education for education’s sake. Technology has made it possible for short cuts but nothing can replace real learning. Please encourage the children to learn.

He congratulated Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State for doing very well on infrastructure, adding that his recent State visits to Kogi, Yobe, Lagos and Katsina have shown that the respective Governors have done very well, within the confines of funds available to them.

Security

On security, the President, who described boko haram as a fraudulent organization with links to international groups bent on destroying Nigeria, said his administration has succeeded in decimating the terror group, limiting their capacity to inflict harm.

Earlier, while paying homage to the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, President Buhari urged Nigerians to respect traditional institutions and accord them the honour they deserve.

The President, who also inaugurated the Emir’s Council Chambers at the Palace, said of the traditional institution:

‘‘This system is good. It is good in the sense that our traditional institutions are respected and honoured.

‘‘It is very important that we have understood the politics and we are respecting people from the bottom to upwards and this is common sense because people matter.

‘‘What the children see now is what they will hope to be in the future and the older ones hope that they can make their influence felt and improve the governance in the country from bottom upwards.’’

He thanked the Emir of Kano for associating him with the success of the traditional institution, lauding him for the vast improvement in the lot of his people, since he ascended the throne three years ago.

The Emir of Kano, who underscored the importance of the visit, thanked President Buhari for granting approval to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the deadline for the phasing out of old currency notes, and by implication the implementation of the cashless policy.

‘‘This is an indication that the President is focused on alleviating the plight of the citizenry and indeed a listening leader,’’ he said.

Election

The Royal Father expressed appreciation to the Federal and States Government for the developmental projects in the State as well as the support to the Emirate.

He added that the ongoing electioneering campaigns should serve as an opportunity for politicians to understand the challenges facing the people and devise a means to solve them.

The Emir prayed for peaceful elections, as well as peace and prosperity in the country.

The President stated this at Government House, Kano, during a working lunch, after inaugurating about eight mega-projects executed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He insisted that his government remains committed to the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents, bandits and other criminals in the country.

“One can clearly see how these foreign countries took on our weaker part of Nigeria, the Lake Chad region, where we have reserves of Crude Oil and caused serious mayhem there, with consistent attacks.”

President Buhari added that, in Lake Chad, if not that Borno state has a Governor like Ummara Zulum, who is serious on his duties, the story would have been different by now.

According to him, in 2015 when he assumed office, in Borno many Local Government Areas were in the control of Boko Haram, “And we are aware that some people are using the insurgents to cause problems, but today most of these Local Governments are free.”

President lamented that those destroying Borno state, using Boko Haram know that Borno is a potentially rich state, “That was why when I was a Governor there, I went to Niger, Chad and even Cameroon because you need your Neighbours to survive.”

President Buhari commended Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for the infrastructural developments in the state.

He also extended commendations to the Governors of Lagos, Kaduna, Katsina and Kogi states for performing creditably in the dispensation of democratic dividends while urging stakeholders to help promote the education of youths who he described as potential leaders, pointing out that lack of education breeds social problems.

Scorecard: FCT Minister lists achievements

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Muhammad Bello, on Monday, listed the achievements and Infrastructure developments in Abuja.

The Minister who was featured at the 20th edition of President Buhari’s administration Scorecard Series, organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, explained that the event provided an opportunity to list the wide array of achievements and transformations that Buhari’s administration recorded in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“When we came in on board in 2015, my team and I realized that the capital city Abuja, was basically a work in progress with so many projects initiated but no completed and all these projects were critical, particularly taking into account the rate at which the city was growing demographically.

“Because over time it changes from being an administrative centre and city to a commercial and economic hug and gradually now it is also transforming itself into a tourism and cultural destination.

“So, we realized that if we do not complete all the ongoing projects we met on ground then at one point the city will just become Lagos because all the reasons why the Federal Government move the Federal Capital City from Lagos to Abuja would have been come to nothing

So, what we have done over the last seven and half years or so is basically to try to develop the territory in all ramifications. In terms of infrastructure and all other services that normally is expected in a state such as education, health, agriculture, social services and security, roads, bridges, rail line, water system, electricity and power generation.”

The Minister said that the FCT Administration under his leadership had completed many critical infrastructure projects which by any standard could compare with any kind in the world.

He called on the FCT residents to jealousy guard Abuja, protect its infrastructure, cleanliness, the environment and above all try to make it a truly beautiful green city where everybody would feel happy to raise their families and hopefully retire.

Bello added that some of the projects like bridges have linked several districts and eased traffic movement within the city centre, saying that as an administration we need to project what we have.

“All these are parts of the scorecard of President Buhari’s administration which unfortunately sometimes those of us who live in Abuja do not notice but when people come from West African countries and I see a lot of them especially, visiting Heads of States they whisper to me that Abuja is beautiful and is the Paris of West Africa.

“Part of what we do as an administration in terms of infrastructure is developing road networks as well as public buildings. When we came on board we realized that there was a commitment by the previous government to rebuild the United Nations building in Nigeria which was bombed by terrorists.

“We met President Buhari and told him that there was a commitment that Nigeria made to the United Nations family to complete the UN building in Nigeria and Buhari provided the needs funds and we work with the contractor, restored the building, completed it to what it is today.

“And I can tell you that the leadership of the United Nations personally told me that out of New York, the UN doesn’t have any other building that can match the one in Abuja. This is something that most people don’t know about President Buhari.

“Once you meet him for a project that is going to benefits people and is going to project Nigeria as a country he will just approve it and if there are no funds he will look at the Minister of Finance in such a way that he does during the Federal Executive Council and say to the minister get the money.”

Bello said that over the past seven and half years the capacity of all the institutions of the FCT Administration have been enhanced greatly in terms of training, empowerment and above all allowing the institutions to operate as they were meant to function.

Abuja Light Rail

On the Abuja Light Rail, the Minister said; “Another important milestone achievements of President Buhari’s administration is the infrastructure development of the Abuja Light Rail. When we can in 2015, about 52 per cent of the projects was done and we pushed it to 100 per cent.

“And many of you will want to wonder why is the Abuja Light Rail is not working, it is not working now because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We had to stop the operation because as you know the light train system basically is a mass movement, so if you don’t have much siting capacity many people will stand up and when you stand up you face each other.

“So, it was obviously very difficult to maintain social distancing but we are done with that all the carriages are here and by the grace of God before we leaves it will resume.”

The minister disclosed that about 12 stations have been completed and about five of them the roads are under construction.

“These are works we do in the satellite town because the structure of the FCT is that we have developments in the Urban area that is the Federal Capital City as well as development in the satellite towns.

“But the standards we maintain for infrastructure for the Federal Capital City itself is the same that we maintain in the satellite towns no difference whatsoever, this is to encourage residents to stay in the satellite towns.”

Cashless policy can help track election financing – VP Osinbajo

0

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo says a cashless policy, when effectively operated, can help stem the surge of illicit election financing by making it possible to track funds.

He stated this on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he received a delegation of the European Union Election Observation Mission led by Mr Barry Andrews, the Chief Observer, who is also a member of the European Parliament.

“I think that what we should be looking at is to provide more infrastructures. The cashless thing has been really advantageous and helps with tracking.

“That sort of infrastructure is useful for more financial inclusion and the more financial inclusion you have, the easier it is to track.”

Prof. Osinbajo said so much money could be spent without it being tracked under the current election financing practices in the country.

Pointing out the serious difficulty the country faces in controlling election financing because of cash transactions, the vice president said that there were still infrastructure issues required to be in place to ensure an efficient cashless system in the country.

“With cash transactions, it is still difficult to seriously control election financing,” he said.

On the issue of electoral offences, the vice president said that there is the Electoral Offences Commission Bill at the National Assembly and expressed hope that it would begin a new regime of dealing with electoral offences which would be helpful.

“By and large, one shouldn’t expect INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) to be the investigator of electoral offences.

“I think that law enforcement agencies should be responsible for arresting and prosecuting offenders, State by State.

“Electoral offences are always seen through a political prism; people will always feel that they are being prosecuted because they belong to a certain party.

“What is more important is that we have to find a system where the police could have a special unit for offences during the course of elections. The Federal High Courts could also have a special jurisdiction to deal with offences and not extend beyond the Federal High Courts.”

On the role of the judicial system, the Vice President said more attention should be paid to the monitoring of tribunals and their outcomes, calling for more scrutiny from the National Judicial Council.

He disclosed that discussions have been had in the past concerning malfeasance on the part of some judges and those found guilty should be brought to the fore.

“There should be sanctions and that way, we would be able to clean up and correct some of the problems, Prof. Osinbajo stated.

The EU Chief Observer, Mr Andrews said the Observer Mission would be monitoring the elections coming up next month and hoped for a peaceful and fair electoral process.

According to him, this is the 7th time the Independent National Electoral Commission is inviting the EU Mission to monitor the elections.

He added that the team has been in the country since 11th January and would be here till the end of March 2023.

Other members of the delegation include Ms Samuela Isopi, Ambassador, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS and Mr Thomas Boserup, Deputy Chief Observer, EU Election Observation Mission.

8 dead at birthday party shooting in South Africa

0

Eight people have been killed and three others injured during a mass shooting at a birthday party in Gqeberha city in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.

Two unidentified gunmen randomly shot at guests who were dancing and mingling at a house party in Kwazakhele township, police say. Vusumzi Sishuba, who was celebrating his 51st birthday, is among the dead. No arrests have been made, but police have urged the public to share any information about the shooting.

Mr. Sishuba’s family is “in a state of shock and disbelief,” a relative told Reuters news agency. Five men and three women, aged 20-64, have been identified as victims of Sunday night’s shooting.

“Criminals killed these victims, and we will not rest until we find out what happened and who handled [this] callous and cold-blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims,” said Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene.

The motive behind the attack is unknown. Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the shooting scene on Monday and asked for patience while the investigation continued.

“We know everybody is angry and would love that we respond quickly, but we request a little of space so that we do the work thoroughly,” he told reporters in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth.

South Africa has one of the highest gun crime rates in the world, but random mass shootings are uncommon. Last year, the country saw a string of shootings in separate bars, which left over 20 people dead. Those shootings are still under investigation.

Russia-Ukraine war: I am against sending lethal arms – President Milanovic

0

Croatia’s president Zoran Milanovic told reporters in the Croatian capital that he was against sending lethal arms to Ukraine because it would only prolong the war.

He further criticised Western nations for supplying Ukraine with heavy tanks and other weapons in its campaign against invading Russian forces. He added it was “mad” to believe that Russia could be defeated in a conventional war.

“What is the goal? Disintegration of Russia, change of the government? There is also talk of tearing Russia apart. This is mad,” he said. “Crimea will never again be part of Ukraine,” Milanovic added.

The Croatian president was elected in 2019 as a left-leaning liberal candidate, a counterpoint to the conservative government currently in power in the European Union and NATO-member states. But he has since made a turn to populist nationalism and criticised Western policies towards Russia as well as the Balkans.

Milanovic has built a reputation for being pro-Russia, which he has repeatedly denied. Yet, in recent months, he has openly opposed the admission of Finland and Sweden into NATO and the training of Ukrainian troops in Croatia as part of EU aid to the embattled country.

After months of hesitation, the United States said last week that it would send 31 of the 70-tonne Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, and Germany announced it would dispatch 14 Leopard 2 tanks and allow other countries to do the same.

Milanovic said that “from 2014 to 2022, we are watching how someone provokes Russia intending to start this war. What is the goal of this war? A war against a nuclear power that is at war in another country? Is there a conventional way to defeat such a country?” Milanovic asked on Monday.

“Who pays the price? Europe. America pays the least,” he said. “A year has passed, and we are only now talking about tanks,” Milanovic said. “Not a single American tank will go to Ukraine in a year. Only German tanks will be sent there.” Although the presidential post is ceremonial mainly in Croatia, Milanovic is formally the supreme commander of the armed forces.

DSS arrests Suspects Accused of Selling New Naira Notes

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has intercepted some syndicates in parts of the country for allegedly selling the new redesigned Naira notes.
This is contained in a statement issued by Dr Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer of the DSS, on Monday in Abuja.
He said the syndicates were intercepted by operatives of the service during an operation.
Investigation has also shown that some Commercial Bank officials were aiding the  economic malfeasance.
“Consequently, the Service warns the currency racketeers to desist from this ignoble act.
“Appropriate regulatory authorities are, in this same vein, urged to step up monitoring and supervisory activities to expeditiously  address the emerging trends,” he said.
He said the DSS has ordered its commands and formations to further ensure that all  persons and groups engaged in the illegal sale of the notes were identified.
The DSS spokesman, therefore, urged anyone with useful information relating to the sales of the new currency to pass the same to relevant authorities.
