She said the plan started in December 2022, to ensure capacity building for the health workers.

“When the innovation begin, we will see how it will be develop and what will be further supported for us to do it as well.

“Because it is very important we can have analytic approach, integrated services as we are talking about nutrition.

“For us, the child comes first and one of the first thing to give a child is the opportunity to live healthy,” Munduate said.

The Country representative noted that malnutrition was a threat to the lives of children.

Expert advises Nigerians On Maintenance Of Healthy Heart

0

An interventional Cardiologist, Dr Abraham Ariyo, has advised Nigerians to embrace healthy diets to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases, CVD.

Ariyo, Director, Heart Masters Cardiology in Dallas, Texas, United States, gave the advice on Tuesday in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH ), CVD is a significant public health concern responsible for 11% of over two million non-communicable disease deaths in Nigeria annually.

It said that CVD was also responsible for a high burden of morbidity and disability, noting that most people with CVDs were not aware until catastrophes like stroke, heart attack or death occur.

Ariyo noted that Nigerians rarely have heart attacks in the past due to traditional meals that was consumed and active lifestyle.

He, however, said that “consumption of processed and cholesterol filled foods by Nigerians, especially in the urban areas was driving CVDs in the country.”

“Many persons in the western countries have realised the problem and are moving away from such kind of food to vegetarian, fresh food and less cholesterol laden food.

Nigerians are moving to where the western countries were, with their high consumption of fast foods like pizzas, hamburgers, and many cholesterol-filled foods,” the Health expert said.

Rise of unexplained death

Ariyo noted that the rise in sudden and unexplained deaths in Nigeria might be due to undetected cardiovascular diseases.

According to him, “staying healthy is a personal responsibility and each individual should embrace to live a long and healthy life.”

Ariyo said it was critical for the public to acquire basic life support training skills, stressing that “it saves lives as it takes care of critical medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest management.”

Without immediate and appropriate attention, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims can lose their lives, while cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provides temporary assistance. In critical situations like these, it’s crucial to act swiftly and confidently. Seeking proper CPR training from reputable sources, such as websites like “https://cprcertificationnow.com,” can empower individuals to respond effectively in emergencies and potentially save lives. Additionally, having access to a defibrillator can further enhance the chances of survival during sudden cardiac arrest.

“Defibrillators are devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat, “he said.

Ariyo said ideally a defibrillator should be available in public places to address emergency situations, thus appealed to governments, NGOs and philanthropists to provide toward saving lives of Nigerians.

He noted that each year, American-based, Nigerian-born, team of heart specialists, which include interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, nurses and cardiac device companies from the US visit Nigeria for a week of marathon cardiovascular care.

Ariyo said that these visits made some medical practitioners return to Nigeria to practice and set up hospitals that perform up-to-date and complete cardiovascular care.

“This is the right step in the right direction with indigenous people starting to take non-governmental initiatives to increase health care capacity in Nigeria’s private sector,” he said.

Ariyo expressed optimism that collaboration among critical stakeholders would bring solution to the numerous challenges affecting the healthcare sector of Nigeria.

Ariyo, is also the President, North America U.S. chapter of Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMAA).

Afghanistan: Freezing Weather Kills At Least 124 People

0

At least 124 people died in freezing temperatures in Afghanistan in the past fortnight, Taliban officials say.

About 70,000 livestock had also perished in what is the coldest winter in a decade, a State Ministry for Disaster Management spokesman said.

Many aid agencies suspended operations in recent weeks after the Taliban banned Afghan women from working for non-governmental organisations.

A Taliban minister said despite the deaths, the edict would not be changed.

Acting Minister of Disaster Management Mullah Mohammad Abbas Akhund says many areas of Afghanistan were now completely cut off by snow; military helicopters had been sent to the rescue, but they couldn’t land in the most mountainous regions. Reports said.

The acting minister said the forecast for the next 10 days indicated temperatures would warm. But he was still worried about a rising death toll – of Afghans, and their livestock.

Most of the people who lost their lives to the cold were shepherds or people living in rural areas. They didn’t have access to healthcare,” Mullah Akhund said.

Mountain Regions
We’re concerned about those who are still living in the mountain regions. Most of the roads which pass through the mountains have been closed due to snow. Cars have got stuck there and passengers have died in the freezing temperatures.”

Winters are always harsh here in Afghanistan but this is the worst weather in a decade.

And this year’s relief operations are hampered by last month’s Taliban government edict barring Afghan women from working in aid agencies.

But Mullah Akhund was categorical. This edict could not be lifted – the international community, he insisted, had to accept Afghanistan’s Islamic culture.

Men are already working with us in the rescue effort and there is no need for women to work with us. The men from every family are already participating in relief efforts, so there’s no need for women,” he says. Reports said.

Aid officials, including the United Nations, are urgently trying to find ways to work around this ban.

Russia’s Military Reforms Respond to NATO’s Expansion

0

Russia’s new military reforms respond to possible NATO expansion and the use of Kyiv by the “collective West” to wage a hybrid war against Russia, the newly appointed general in charge of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine said.

Valery Gerasimov, in his first public comments since his Jan. 11 appointment to the role, admitted also to problems with the mobilisation of troops, after public criticism forced President Vladimir Putin to reprimand the military.

The military reforms, announced mid-January, have been approved by Putin and can be adjusted to respond to threats to Russia’s security, Gerasimov told the news website Argumenty i Fakty in remarks published late Monday.

Today, such threats include the aspirations of the North Atlantic Alliance to expand to Finland and Sweden, as well as the use of Ukraine as a tool for waging a hybrid war against our country,” said Gerasimov, who is also the chief of Russia’s military general staff.

Finland and Sweden applied last year to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Under Moscow’s new military plan, “an army corps will be added to Karelia in Russia’s north, which borders with Finland.”

The reforms also call for two additional military districts, Moscow and Leningrad, which existed before they were merged in 2010 to be part of the Western Military District.

In Ukraine, Russia will add three motorized rifle divisions as part of combined arms formations in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, parts of which Moscow claims it annexed in September.

The main goal of this work is to ensure guaranteed protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country,” Gerasimov said.

Intensity of Military Hostilities
Gerasimov added that modern Russia has never seen such “intensity of military Hostilities,” forcing it to carry out offensive operations to stabilise the situation.

Our country and its armed forces are today acting against the entire collective West,” Gerasimov said.

In the 11 months since invading Ukraine, Russia has been shifting its rhetoric on the war from an operation to “denazify” and “demilitarise” its neighbour to increasingly casting it as defence from an aggressive West.

Kyiv and its Western allies call it an unprovoked act of aggression, and the West has been sending increasingly heavy weaponry to Ukraine to help it resist Russian forces.

Gerasimov and the leadership of the defence ministry have faced sharp criticism for multiple setbacks on the battlefield and Moscow’s failure to secure victory in a campaign the Kremlin had expected to take just a short time.

The country’s mobilisation of some 300,000 additional personnel in the fall proceeded chaotically.

The system of mobilization training in our country was not fully adapted to the new modern economic relations,” Gerasimov said. “So I had to fix everything on the go”

He said 5G would not just benefit the urban areas but also meet long-term goals of ensuring that rural areas and villages enjoy the benefits of this amazing technology.

“The rollout of Mafab 5G networks is the beginning of immense opportunities for the country as it represents Nigeria’s capabilities and infinite possibilities. The prospect of increased job opportunities as a consequence of the value-chain benefits the technology will generate and offer is the dream we have all gathered here to launch today”

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami recalled that on January 25, 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the National 5G policy for Nigeria’s digital economy.

Professor Pantami said as the Chairman of the National Frequency Management Council in Nigeria, he handed over the frequency spectrum to Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC and it conducted a transparent auctioning where two operators emerged as the winners, MAFAB and MTN.

“MTN commenced the roll and now MAFAB has joined the queue, I congratulate the Chairman of MAFAB for his commitment to the success of MAFAB. It is absolutely difficult to have a new player who joined the sector within a small period and also to be competing with some of the active players in the sector”, he said.

He said 5G has enormous benefits for security institutions because there are technologies in security that leverage it which allows security institutions to properly manage security situations.

“5G allows real-time communications, and this has so many benefits to our security institutions to manage challenges effectively, like robots. There are so many technologies and artificial intelligence to help our security institutions. All of them leverage effectively on 5G, so this is in addition to economic benefits”, he said.

The Minister said there were many benefits of 5G, most importantly towards economic development.

“While 5G brings a lot of excitement about fast downloads, low latency and high speeds, our promise is ubiquitous data for Nigerians. Broadband is now an essential requirement and our data native network aims to deliver this to Nigerians,” Onigbanjo said.

Recall that MTN Nigeria and MAFAB Communications won the 5G licenses of the 3.5GHz spectrum auction conducted on December 13, 2021.

They paid a $547.2 million license fee each to the Federal Government by February 24, 2022.

The company added that the launch of its 5G services and a brand-new logo, heralds the dawn of a new era of infinite possibilities which the technology offers.

We Will Not Extend Old Naira Notes Withdrawal Date-CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN says it is not going back on the date set to withdraw the legal tender status of the old naira notes.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said this while fielding questions at the end of the first Monetary Policy Committee meeting of 2023.

Emefiele said, “Unfortunately, I don’t have good news for those who feel that we should shift the deadline. My apologies. The reason is because just like the President has said on more than two occasions and even to people privately, for us 90 days or 100 days we feel is enough for anybody who has money or old currency to deposit it in the banks.

“We took every measure to ensure that all the banks were open or remain open to receive the old currencies. One hundred days we believe is more than adequate. We called on the banks to extend banking hours and keep doors open on Saturdays. The banks did not have any reason to even keep their banking halls open on Saturday neither did they see the kind of rush. It was the normal people who came and deposited in the banks.

“We do not see any need to talk about a shift because people could not deposit their old money into their banks. About the circulation of the new currency, we said the currency was available.”

According to him, the apex bank stopped banks from paying new notes over the counter because they were not paying to the vulnerable people that needed the new notes.

He said banks “paid new notes to their friends. We told the banks to fill their ATMs with new notes and do not put in old notes again. We increased the volume of disbursement of new notes to the banks and at some points, we told banks to reduce the volume of old notes in their banks at a certain percentage because on the first you should have zero old notes in their vaults.”

He lamented that in 2015, N1.42trn was in circulation but the figures jumped to N3.23trn in 2023.

According to him, N1.7trn out of the N3.23trn is outside bank vaults.

“It has made the efficacy of monetary policy difficult,” Emefiele stated.

The CBN Governor said so far, the apex bank has received N1.6trn from banks since the date of the announcement.

He revealed he has appealed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC and other antigraft agencies to allow people deposit their cash.

Infant Mortality Rate Drops In Kaduna State

0

The Kaduna State government says neonatal and infant mortality rate has reduced in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Mohammed-Baloni said neonatal mortality rate dropped from 63 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 47 per 1,000 births in 2021.

She made the declaration while addressing the 12th Kaduna State Council on Health meeting in Kaduna on Tuesday.

Mohammed-Baloni also said that “Under-five mortality rate dropped from 187 per 1,000 births in 2018 to 127 per 1,000 births in 2021.”

The Under-five mortality rate for Kaduna State at 127 per 1,000 births in 2021 was the lowest in the Northwest geopolitical zone,” she said

The Commissioner noted that the rate was, however, slightly higher than the national average rate of 102 per 1,000 births.

Mohammed-Baloni said; “There was a general improvement in most of the reproductive, maternal and child indicators and Kaduna State performed better than all the states in the Northwest zone in Under-five mortality rate.

“Percentage of one-year-olds who had received three doses of the combined diphtheria, tetanus toxoid and pertussis vaccine (Penta3) in Kaduna State improved from 26.5 per cent in 2017 to 60 per cent in 2021.

“Kaduna State was recognised as the most improved state in the Northwest zone in immunisation against diphtheria, tetanus toxoid and pertussis (Penta-3) in 2021.”

The National Bureau of Statistics conducted a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) in 2021 as part of the Global MICS Programme where it rated immunisation coverage in states of the federation and the FCT.

The Commissioner explained that council members would approve various strategies to facilitate the attainment of the state’s goal of ensuring that residents have access to quality and affordable healthcare without financial catastrophes.

Mohammed-Baloni also told the meeting that the health system assessment in the state showed that there were still concerns about service delivery, medicines and vaccines and health financing

The inventory assessment and the workforce productivity assessment all revealed gaps in the availability of modern equipment and human resource productivity.

“These have guided the development of the 2022 and the 2023 annual operation and sector implementation plans and will also guide the development of the third strategic health development plan,’’ she said.

Mohammed-Baloni stressed that the state government established the Health Management Authority to ease the burden of payment for health services in the state.

She said; “The state earmarked 1 per cent of its Consolidated Revenue Fund to cater to vulnerable population and so far, 496,752 residents have been enrolled into the scheme.

“The state has also been allocating above 15 per cent of its budget to health since 2017 in line with the 2001 Abuja declaration with an average of 67 per cent budget performance over the last six years.’’

Mohammed-Baloni urged health sector actors and managers to critically reflect on how to re-strategise, and re-focus to achieve universal health coverage in the state.

The Kaduna State Council on Health has the responsibility to guide and advise government on matters relating to health.

It meets annually to review the sector’s performance, identify challenges and proffer corrective actions that would ensure provision of quality healthcare services.

The theme for the 12th meeting is: Health system strengthening: Key to achieving universal health coverage in Kaduna State.
