Gombe, Adamawa States Strengthen Regional Ties

0

The Governors of Gombe and Adamawa States have strengthened regional cooperation as Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya hosted his Adamawa counterpart, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for the commissioning of key infrastructure projects in Gombe State.

During the visit, Governor Fintiri inaugurated the 33-kilometre Ture–Sabon Layi Awak–Dogon Ruwa–Gelengu–Balanga Gari road, including a spur linking Bakasi, Balansani, and Dasan Buzu.

He also commissioned the Talasse–Degri–Bembelem road, with both projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activity in the area.

Governor Fintiri commended Governor Yahaya’s leadership, describing him as “focused, visionary, and God-fearing,” and praised his commitment to prioritising the welfare of the people.

“This is my first time in this part of the state despite its proximity to Adamawa, and I must say these are enduring projects that will stand the test of time,” he said.

The Adamawa State Governor proposed a cross-border road project linking Shelleng communities in Adamawa with Gombe through the Borgu–Dala Waja–Wala Lunguda corridor. The move expected to strengthen social ties and stimulate economic growth along the border.

Solar Power Revival After 15 Years

The Governors also commissioned a Model Almajiri (Tsangaya) School in Bakassi, designed to integrate traditional Islamic education with formal basic schooling.

At Talasse, they inspected an off-grid solar power facility set to restore electricity to communities that have been without power for over 15 years.

The project, implemented through a public-private partnership involving the World Bank, the Gombe State Government, and Balanga Local Government, is expected to generate one megawatt of electricity, enough to serve over 30 communities and about 6,000 households.

According to the contractor, “work on the facility is about 80 per cent complete, with solar panels largely installed and battery systems undergoing final safety checks.”

The plant will have a storage capacity of 2.6 megawatt-hours, ensuring a 24-hour power supply, with plans for future expansion to two megawatts.

Traditional Honour

The visit also featured a courtesy call on the Bala Waja, His Royal Highness Mohammed Danjuma Mohammed, who lauded both Governors for their inclusive governance and commitment to regional development.

In recognition of his efforts, Governor Fintiri was conferred with the traditional title of Bachama Waja, “Ambassador of the Waja Chiefdom.”

In their closing remarks, Governors Yahaya and Fintiri reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships in infrastructure development and economic integration for the long-term benefit of their states.

Nigerian Government Defends Jilli Airstrike as Precision Operation

0

The Nigerian Government has defended the April 11 airstrike carried out by the Air Force in the Jilli axis of Gubio Local Government Area, Borno State, describing it as a “precision, intelligence-led operation” targeting a terrorist stronghold.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the operation was conducted under Operation HADIN KAI and was aimed at disrupting insurgent activities in one of the North-East’s most volatile corridors.

Idris said; “This was a deliberate, intelligence-led operation, not an indiscriminate attack. The Jilli axis has long been designated a high-risk zone with clear security advisories restricting civilian presence.”

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to national security, the Minister expressed regret over reported civilian casualties.

He said; “Every Nigerian life is sacred, and any loss of civilian life is deeply regretted. I extend condolences to affected families and sympathise with the injured.”

According to him, the strike followed weeks of surveillance and credible intelligence indicating that the area, locally referred to as Kasu Daulaye or “terrorists’ market”, served as a hub for Boko Haram and ISWAP operations.

The Minister cited further evidence gathered on April 12, when troops arrested a 15-year-old ISWAP courier, identified as Tijjani, in Ngamdu.

“The suspect admitted transporting funds and logistics between Jilli and other locations, underscoring the extent of terrorist activity and the exploitation of civilians, including minors,” he said.

The Minister said that a full and independent investigation has been ordered to assess the circumstances surrounding the strike.

“This review will examine intelligence, targeting, and execution. We will address any gaps and ensure accountability where necessary,” Idris said.

He added that humanitarian assistance is already being coordinated in partnership with the Borno and Yobe State Governments, as well as emergency agencies, urging civilians to comply strictly with security advisories in conflict zones.

Idris further urged the media to prioritise responsible journalism in reporting security matters.

Highlighting broader counter-terrorism efforts, the Minister said that “386 convictions had been secured out of 508 terrorism-related cases in recent trials at the Federal High Court in Abuja.”

He reiterated the Nigerian Government’s determination to defeat terrorism and maintain national security, with a commitment to greater precision, accountability, and sustained action to achieve lasting peace.

Lookman’s Strike Sends Atletico Madrid Into Champions League Semis

Nigerian Ademola Lookam scored to help Atletico Madrid reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final, squeezing past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 home defeat at the Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain.

Diego Simeone’s side thought they had done much of the heavy lifting with a 2-0 win at ‌the Camp Nou in the first leg but that cushion was wiped out by an early Barca blitz as the visitors struck twice in the first half to level the tie.

Winger Lamine Yamal capitalised on a Clement Lenglet error to open the scoring for Barcelona in the fourth minute, finishing neatly past goalkeeper Juan Musso after Ferran Torres set him up.

Torres then made it 2-0 in the 24th, racing clear onto Dani Olmo’s pass and driving the ball into the top corner.

Atletico, rocked but not floored, found a lifeline in the 31st minute. Marcos Llorente burst down the right and drilled a low cross to the far post, where Lookman outpaced his marker and fired inside the left post to restore the hosts’ aggregate lead.

Federal Orthopaedic Hospital Billiri, Gombe Set for Opening

0

The Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Billiri, Gombe State, is ready for official opening and operations, marking a landmark development for healthcare in Nigeria’s North-east.

The facility, the first of its kind in the entire sub-region, was facilitated by the member representing Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, Dr Ali Isa JC as part of his Constituency projects.

Isa-JC, introduced the project as a bill in the National Assembly, and it was subsequently approved and assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier this year.

Briefing close political associates and supporters during a closed-door meeting in Gombe, Dr Isa-JC, who is the Minority Whip of the House of Representatives in the 10th Assembly, confirmed that the facility would be included in the 2026 Supplementary Budget.

He said this had already been added to the budget line for government ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, “an interim three‑man management committee has been proposed for the Nigerian Government’s approval, while 20 people from the constituency had been appointed on an ad‑hoc basis to ensure the hospital’s immediate take‑off.”

Isa-JC explained that the commissioning would be carried out by senior government officials, in conjunction with state authorities and in the company of the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who has already given his approval for operations to commence.

He said “the Governor has also approved an upgrade of the General Hospital in Billiri to complement the new orthopaedic facility.”

In response to the lawmaker’s address, speakers commended his unwavering efforts in delivering the dividends of democracy to an area that had previously lacked such developments.

They gave him the assurances of their continued support in his political future and all his endeavours.

The meeting, which addressed several far-reaching political issues affecting Balanga/Billiri, resolved unanimously to move en masse to whichever party Isa-JC ultimately joins to further his career.

Isa-JC gave assurances to the gathering that an announcement regarding the political platform on which he would contest the 2027 elections would be made known in due course.

Nigeria Achieving Fiscal Stability, Investor Confidence — President Tinubu

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria is now witnessing improved fiscal stability, stronger foreign reserves, a more efficient trade ecosystem, and increased investor confidence in the nation’s economic direction.

The President stated this on Tuesday, in his remarks at the official commissioning ceremony of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters, Abuja.

President Tinubu highlighted that the gains are not incidental but product of deliberate policy choices, sustained effort, and a firm commitment to doing what is right for the long-term prosperity of Nigeria.

“It is within this context that we commission this headquarters of Nigerian Revenue Service.

“Our direction is clear; a revenue system that rewards enterprise, supports growth and ensures that every contribution to the national purse is matched by feasible value for people. The early results are encouraging; fantastic. Mr Adedeji, thank you very much,” he said.

President Tinubu tasked the Nigeria Revenue Service to build trust, ensure fairness and demonstrate that government can be accountable, efficient and responsive.

Referencing the completion of the Nigeria Revenue Service Headquarters as a clear signal that Nigeria is moving beyond promises to tangible progress, President Tinubu said the edifice embodies a new standard of professionalism, transparency, efficiency, and service.

“The building is more than concrete and steel, it is a symbol of a new standard of professionalism, transparency, efficiency and service. It reflects our result that institutions must rise to meet the demand of reforms and the expectations of the Nigerian people.

“We must thank Nigerian people for enduring and persevering, for their resilience to date and to the Nigerian Revenue Service, you must embody this new ethos. It must not only collect revenue, it must build trust, it must ensure fairness. It must demonstrate that government can be accountable, efficient, responsive. It must become a model institution that earns confidence at home and respect abroad.

“The completion of this building, at this moment, is not by chance. It is a statement that Nigeria is no longer content with promises, we are delivering progress,” President Tinubu said.

The Nigerian Leader reiterated his pledge to citizens that his administration will confront structural weaknesses, restore fairness and build an economy anchored on discipline, equity and opportunity.

“On my inauguration day, I made a solemn pledge that we would move Nigeria from the dimness of uncertainty into the clear light of renewed hope. I committed that, that we will confront structural weaknesses, restore fairness and build an economy anchored on discipline, equity and opportunity.

“Today, I stand before you to reaffirm that these words were not rhetoric. They were a covenant with the Nigerian people.

“This project has endured through different phases of our national journey. Let the future be better than the past. Let’s hold that promise sincerely to the future. Let those who will come after us, politics apart, be ready to build on history that is greater than the vision of their forebears.

“History will not judge us by what we say, but by what we do, by the institutions we strengthen and the discipline we sustain,” he added.

President Tinubu said that his administration will stay the course of reform, discipline, and inclusive development, assuring that the government will remain steadfast and focused until Nigeria’s promise is matched by the performance of its institutions and the prosperity of its people.

Benefits of Good Governance

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as the insight and vision driving good governance in Nigeria, while urging citizens to embrace self-reliance and national discipline as critical drivers of the country’s progress.

Akpabio said Nigeria must rise through its own efforts rather than depend on external support, stressing that sustainable growth would arise from internal resolve and commitment.

He underscored the need for the nation to be guided by its own discipline, rather than external influences and called on citizens and leaders alike to strengthen their determination to build the country from within.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, said the project comprising sixteen floors across three towers with a capacity to accommodate over 3,000 people, goes beyond its impressive scale.

He noted that its true significance lies in what it represents: the delivery of an institution designed to serve not only the present generation but many more to come.

NSITF, Partners Drive Social Protection in West Africa

0

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), has assured stakeholders of its readiness to facilitate meaningful, solution-driven discussions aimed at strengthening social protection systems across the region as Nigeria hosts the 2026 International Social Security Association (ISSA) West Africa Technical Seminar.

The Managing Director of NSITF, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, gave this assurance during a media briefing ahead of the seminar, scheduled to take place in Abuja next week. He emphasised the fund’s readiness to collaborate with key stakeholders and development partners to establish social security in the workplace.

Faleye explained that the seminar, themed “Improving Inclusiveness and Accessibility of Social Security Services through Effective Communication”, is not merely an event but part of a broader effort to enhance social protection systems across West Africa.

He stated that while Nigeria has made significant progress in strengthening its social security architecture, particularly through the Employees’ Compensation Scheme and expanded workplace injury coverage, there is still a need to deepen coverage, simplify access, and improve engagement with employers and workers.

“We look forward to welcoming stakeholders from across the region to Abuja. What we begin here is not just a conversation; it is a commitment to strengthening protection for millions of workers across West Africa,” Faleye said.

He noted that the seminar comes at a time when social protection systems globally, and particularly in West Africa, are under increasing pressure to evolve, with millions of workers, especially in the informal sector, remaining outside formal social security coverage.

“The question is no longer whether social security is important but how effectively we are delivering it,” he stated, adding that the seminar will bring together social security institutions, policymakers, employers, and workers’ representatives to improve practical implementation, not just policy frameworks.

Faleye further observed that often, the challenge is not the absence of schemes but limited awareness, complex processes, and low trust in institutions. “Communication is therefore not an add-on; it is central to expanding coverage and building confidence,” he said.

He stressed that Nigeria’s hosting the seminar reflects its commitment to continuous improvement and regional leadership, noting that West Africa shares common structural realities, including large informal economies, youthful and mobile populations, and evolving labour markets. These, he said, make collaboration and context-specific solutions essential.

The Managing Director emphasised that strengthening social security is a shared responsibility, with development partners playing a crucial role in supporting innovation and capacity building.

He listed participating organisations as including the Federal Ministry of Labour, PENCOM, NECA, MAN, NLC, TUC, UNESCO, and the ILO, among others.

Faleye urged governments to establish enabling policies, ensure efficient delivery by institutions, encourage compliance and engagement from employers, and empower and inform workers.

On expected outcomes, he said the seminar would generate practical insights to improve service delivery, strengthen institutional collaboration across the region, and highlight effective communication strategies.

“Ultimately, the goal is to move from coverage in theory to coverage in reality,” he said, adding that social security must become a system people can access, understand, and trust.

The ISSA West Africa Technical Seminar 2026 will hold at the Abuja Continental Hotel from 22 to 23 April 2026.

Akpabio: Politicians Behind Insecurity, Tinubu Focused on Reforms

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said that the recent surge in insurgent attacks across the country is politically motivated and deliberately orchestrated to distract the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service corporate headquarters in Abuja.

The Senate President linked the insecurity to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections and predicted that the attacks would subside once the elections are concluded.

“You are seeing insecurity today; it is even increasing because the election is approaching. As soon as the election is over, watch the first two weeks—you will not hear of bomb blasts because people are sponsoring them to distract,” said Akpabio.

He commended President Tinubu’s administration, stating that the President remains focused on reforms despite mounting political pressure.

“They say this man is too good in many areas and does not know what else to do. Initially, it was fewer than 18 governors; today, we have almost 32 governors under his fold out of 36 states,” he said.

Nigeria is set to enter the 2027 election cycle in under a year, with the ruling All Progressives Congress maintaining a strong presence across several states and significant influence in the National Assembly.

Akpabio also dismissed opposition concerns about a drift towards a one-party state, arguing that many political parties are weakened by internal crises and organisational deficiencies.

“So where do we belong? How do you win elections when you do not have structure? No political party today is stable in this country,” he said.

He further criticised calls for the resignation of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged partisan social media activity, insisting that attention should instead be focused on strengthening national unity and improving preparations for the elections.

“Anybody can support whoever they wish, but when you are in a position of authority, you must think of the entire country and its people,” he added.

Nigeria Will Not Abandon Families Of Fallen Heroes – VP Shettima

0

Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured families of military and police officers killed in a recent attack in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State of the Nigerian government’s continued support.

VP Shettima made the pledge on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, while on a condolence visit to Kebbi State.

He reiterated the President’s resolve not to allow the efforts and gallantry of officers of the armed forces and other security agencies to go in vain.

VP Shettima, who led the Federal Government’s delegation on a condolence visit to the state, conveyed the President’s message to the State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris. He also expressed his condolence to the State over the recent passing of the Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Usman Zuru, in Cairo, Egypt.

The Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes, stressing that the welfare of armed forces personnel and their families remains a top priority under the Tinubu administration.

He said, “We are here in Kebbi, your Excellency, at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commiserate with you, and to register our profound condolences and empathy over the sad developments in your state, in the past couple of days.

“The demise of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, the late Hon. Muhammed Usman Zuru, the destruction of our communities in Shanga Local Government Area and, of course, the loss of our eleven gallant officers.

“We are here to condole with you, the security establishment in Kebbi State and the government and people of Kebbi. Our hearts are with you.”

VP Shettima disclosed that already, President Tinubu has instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to families of the fallen heroes and the displaced communities affected by the sad developments.

“The President also instructed me to come with the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to ensure that adequate measures are put in place to give succour and support to the displaced communities.

“We are going to support you. We appreciate you, we adore you, we respect you, and we will take whatever measures that are necessary for you to do your duties as you ought to do,” he added.

The VP prayed for the repose of the deceased, asking God to grant them peace and eternal rest as well as give the government and people of the state the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

“Your Excellency, please accept, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our profound condolences over the loss of lives and properties. May Allah grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest and reward them with his Aljannah firdaus.

“May Allah also give the government and people of Kebbi State the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses. Please extend the condolences of Mr. President to the families of our fallen heroes. May their souls rest in perfect peace,” he prayed.

The Vice President further commended Governor Idris for infrastructure development and improved investment in education in the state over the past three years.

“Kebbi is home; I would have loved to come on a much more joyous occasion to celebrate with his Excellency. He has done outstandingly well within the last three years. The infrastructural development is excellent- very good investment in education – and, of course, his sense of inclusivity, making all tendencies within Kebbi to have a sense of belonging.

“Your Excellency, the President appreciates you, the President loves you and most importantly the President respects you,” VP Shettima stated, just as he also commiserated with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, on the demise of his sister recently.

Boosting Security

Governor Idris said security agencies in the state are doing their best and are cooperating with state authorities in tackling the challenges in the area.

The Governor said despite the challenges experienced recently, there were improvement in terms of response and tact by security agencies deployed to the state.

He expressed appreciation to the federal government for sending a high powered delegation, under the leadership of vice president Shettima, to condole with the people of kebbi State and the families of the slain officers who lost their lives in the recent attack, as well as the speaker who passed on in Egypt.

The Governor told the Vice President that the state government had already donated N60 million to the families of the eleven slain officers to support them.

He also announced that the communities recently displaced by bandits have been resettled by the state government, adding that adequate security measures were being put in place to prevent the reoccurrence of such ugly situation.

While expressing gratitude to the Vice President for leading the federal government delegation to condole with the people of Kebbi State, the Emir of Zuru, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Sanusi Sami, prayed for peaceful coexistence in Kebbi State and the entire nation.

On the entourage of the Vice President were the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim-Hassan Hadejia; Speaker Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan; Special Adviser to the President on General Duties, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo and the Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, among others.
