The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said that the recent surge in insurgent attacks across the country is politically motivated and deliberately orchestrated to distract the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service corporate headquarters in Abuja.

The Senate President linked the insecurity to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections and predicted that the attacks would subside once the elections are concluded.

“You are seeing insecurity today; it is even increasing because the election is approaching. As soon as the election is over, watch the first two weeks—you will not hear of bomb blasts because people are sponsoring them to distract,” said Akpabio.

He commended President Tinubu’s administration, stating that the President remains focused on reforms despite mounting political pressure.

“They say this man is too good in many areas and does not know what else to do. Initially, it was fewer than 18 governors; today, we have almost 32 governors under his fold out of 36 states,” he said.

Nigeria is set to enter the 2027 election cycle in under a year, with the ruling All Progressives Congress maintaining a strong presence across several states and significant influence in the National Assembly.

Akpabio also dismissed opposition concerns about a drift towards a one-party state, arguing that many political parties are weakened by internal crises and organisational deficiencies.

“So where do we belong? How do you win elections when you do not have structure? No political party today is stable in this country,” he said.

He further criticised calls for the resignation of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged partisan social media activity, insisting that attention should instead be focused on strengthening national unity and improving preparations for the elections.

“Anybody can support whoever they wish, but when you are in a position of authority, you must think of the entire country and its people,” he added.
