Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has formally forwarded the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, noting that the move aligns with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a replacement in the event of a vacancy.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant following the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 2026.
According to the statement, the nomination followed extensive consultations with key political stakeholders across the state, with the governor urging lawmakers to expedite approval.
At 48, Murtala Sule Garo is described as a seasoned political administrator, boasting over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed roles.
His track record includes serving as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of ALGON in Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
He was also the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.
The nomination, the government says, is part of a broader strategy to reinforce governance and sustain efficient service delivery across Kano State.
