Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, Inkosi Brou, will headline the country’s contingent at the 2026 African Senior Fencing Championships in Abidjan, scheduled from May 31st – 6th June.
The 18-year-old, competing in his second continental outing, continues to make history for Nigeria. Earlier this year, he became the first Nigerian to break into the global Top 10 of the Men’s Sabre Junior rankings, cementing his status as one of Africa’s most promising fencing talents.
Despite being born and raised in the United States, Brou, grandson of the late Dora Akunyili, has represented Nigeria since October 2023.

He also secured the country’s first international fencing medal, winning silver at the 2024 World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland.
Joining him in the men’s sabre event are Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye and Phoenix Zaoku-Sabre. Akinyosoye, 21, impressed at the 2025 championships in Lagos, reaching the quarterfinals, and will be looking to build on that performance.
The UK-based athlete previously represented England at cadet and junior levels. Brou, who regularly competes in FIE World Cup events, is also targeting qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where he hopes to become Nigeria’s first Olympic fencer.
National coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed optimism about the team’s chances, highlighting the tournament as a key preparatory platform ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Championships.
He also underscored the importance of integrating more home-based athletes into the national setup.
