U.S. Four-Star General Predicts War With China in 2025

0

A four-star U.S. Air Force general said in a memo that his gut told him the United States would fight China in the next two years, comments that Pentagon officials said were not consistent with American military assessments.

“I hope I am wrong,” General Mike Minihan, who heads the Air Mobility Command, wrote to the leadership of its roughly 110,000 members. “My gut tells me will fight in 2025.”

The letter was dated Feb. 1 but had been sent out on Friday.

The general’s views do not represent the Pentagon but show concern at the highest levels of the U.S. military over a possible attempt by China to exert control over Taiwan, which China claims as a territory. Both the United States and Taiwan will hold presidential elections in 2024, potentially creating an opportunity for China to take military action, Minihan wrote.

These comments are not representative of the department’s view on China,” a U.S. defense official said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said earlier this month “he seriously doubted that ramped up Chinese military activities near the Taiwan Strait were a sign of an imminent invasion of the island by Beijing.”

China has stepped up its diplomatic, military and economic pressure in recent years on the self-governed island to accept Beijing’s rule. Taiwan’s government says “it wants peace but will defend itself if attacked.”

In response to a request for comment, Air Force Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a statement that military competition with China is a central challenge.

Our focus remains on working alongside allies and partners to preserve a peaceful, free and open Indo-Pacific,” he said.

Sweden Tells Citizens to Avoid Crowds in Turkey After Koran Burning

0

Sweden’s foreign ministry on Saturday warned Swedes in Turkey to avoid crowds and demonstrations following protests there over the burning of the Koran by a far-right politician in Stockholm last week.

Last week Turkey suspended talks with Sweden and Finland on their applications to join NATO after the protest at which Rasmus Paludan, leader of the Danish far-right political party Hard Line, burned a copy of the Koran outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

Paludan’s actions have led to demonstrations in a number of Muslim countries as well as in Turkey.

Swedes in Turkey are asked to stay updated on the development of events and to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations,” the foreign ministry said on its advice page for Swedes abroad.

Continued demonstrations can be expected outside the embassy in Ankara and the consulate general in Istanbul in the coming days.”

After Paludan’s protest, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he supported freedom of speech.

“But what is legal is not necessarily appropriate. Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act,” Kristersson said on Twitter.

Sweden and Finland applied last year to join NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

They need support from all 30 members of the Alliance. Turkey has said Sweden in particular must first take a clearer stance against what it sees as terrorists, mainly Kurdish militants and a group it blames for a 2016 coup attempt, in order for it to back NATO membership for the two Nordic countries.

Thirteen-Year-Old Palestinian Held Over shooting in Jerusalem

0

Police says a 13 -year old Palestinian boy was behind a shooting in Jerusalem on Saturday.

Two people – an Israeli father and son – were seriously wounded. The attacker was shot and injured by passers by and is being held in hospital.

It came after seven people were killed, and at least three more injured, in a shooting on Friday at a synagogue in East Jerusalem.

Police have arrested 42 people in connection with that attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli’s response would be “strong, swift and precise.

Ahead of a meeting of his security cabinet, Mr Netanyahu called for calm and urged citizens to allow security forces to carry out their tasks. He also thanked several world leaders including US President Joe Biden.

Describing Saturday’s incident, which took place in the Silwan neighbourhood just outside Jerusalem’s Old City, a spokesperson for the Israeli police previously said the assailant ambushed five people as they made their way to prayers, leaving two in a “critical condition.”

This is a significant rise in the level of terror,” said Dean Elsdunne, adding that the “terrorist” is being treated in hospital.

In response to the two attacks, authorities have positioned officers from a counter-terrorism unit “permanently” in the Jerusalem area to “promptly respond to exceptional events whenever necessary.”

The man who attacked the synagogue on Friday was identified by local media as a Palestinian from East Jerusalem.

Speaking at the scene of the attack on Friday, Israeli police commissioner Kobi Shabtai called it “one of the worst attacks we have encountered in recent years.

Israeli worshippers had gathered for prayers at the start of the Jewish Sabbath in a synagogue in the city’s Neve Yaakov neighbourhood and were leaving when the gunman opened fire, at about 20:15 local time, 18:15 GMT.

Police said that officers then shot him dead.

Palestinian militant groups praised the attack, but did not say one of their members was responsible.”

Tensions have been high since nine Palestinians – both militants and civilians – were killed during an Israeli military raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.

This was followed by rocket fire into Israel from Gaza, which Israel responded to with air strikes.

Nigeria To Get $500m Revenue From Cashew Exports

0

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammed Abubakar says cashew nuts export from Nigeria generated over 250 million dollars in 2022 and it is expected to fetch Nigerian farmers about 500 million dollars in 2023 .

Represented by Dr Ernest Umakhihe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abubakar said this at the Nigerian Cashew Day and Cashew Season Commencement with the theme: “Industrialising the Nigeria Cashew Sector through Inclusive Policies,” on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said: “In Nigeria, cashew is increasing in its importance as an export oriented cash crop since the 1990’s, it has become an important source of non-oil export earnings.

”It is estimated to represent over 10 per cent GDP based on export data of 2022 and it is becoming a commercial crop in Nigeria and is cultivated in 27 states including the FCT..

“In realisation of the importance of cashew, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development listed cashew as a priority crop.

”It is being promoted under the Import Substitution Strategy of the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Abubakar said that the cashew value chain was among the crops being promoted under the Value Chain Programme of the ministry.

The ministry had carried out a number of activities over the years to promote the growth of the value chain in the Country including the distribution of improved seeds/seedlings to cashew farmers free of charge.

“Establishment of cashew cottage industries in some states, distribution of agro-chemicals/growth enhancers, carbon free jute bags and knapsack sprayers.

”Others were provision of water pumps to cashew farmers, conducting capacity building/training for cashew farmers and having sensitisation exercises,” the minister stated.

Mr Ojo Ajanaku, President, National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), said that Nigeria was steadily becoming an export hub and taking over in the country’s foreign exchange trading over the last three years by at least 11 per cent .

He said: “This implies that the sector has the potential to drive national revenue generation, increase job creation and diversify the economy.”

Ajanaku said that more than three million people in Nigeria, especially women had become cashew producers and were driving the sector among their male counterparts.

He added that NCAN’s long term goal is to transform Nigeria from a low-priced commodity producer to a reliable supplier and exporter of high quality cashew products, adopt indigenous innovations and policies to drive the sector.

Data Privacy Day: Nigeria’s Data Protection Sector valued at 5.5billion

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami says the market value of Nigeria’s Data Protection Sector in the country is now valued at 5.5 billion.

In view of this, Professor Pantami stressed the need for a data protection law in the country which will in turn give foreign investors the confidence to do business in Nigeria.

Professor Pantami disclosed this in a Press Conference to mark the commencement of the 2023 Global Data Privacy Week in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital

The Minister noted that potential investors today ask if Nigeria has a Data Protection law before they can invest in the country.

“As of today, the Data Protection Bureau has created many jobs by 2022. The value of it today is around 5.5 billion naira in Nigeria”

“ it is a global best practice to have a data protection law in place, otherwise you will find it difficult to attract so many interventions that are of benefit to your country, secondly, even potential investors today may ask questions whether you have data protection laws in your country or not.

“If you don’t have any data protection law in place they will feel uncomfortable coming to your country and investing because today, data is critical, “The Minister said

He further said that “Whenever we engage with potential investors, we try to convince them of the need of coming to Nigeria to invest, and they always ask if we have data protection law, but we have subsidiary law, and many of them do agree with subsidiary law and at the same time, many disagree that subsidiary law is sufficient for them, but in Nigeria it is sufficient”, Pantami stated.

For this reason, He said that the Ministry came up with the proposal of having a fully-fledged data protection institution and also principal legislation of data protection relations in Nigeria.

Professor Pantami explained that privacy in Nigeria is not only in the enabling law, but rather it is the constitutional right of the citizens and It is part of the fundamental human rights in Nigeria.

“The law about data protection is not in any way to punish our citizens, but rather to create awareness so that we will all be data compliant, that is why it is important, we are urged to comply, and today because of awareness creation, reaching out to other institutions, sanctions and interrogating others, you will discover that the compliance rate is going higher,” he added.

In his remarks, the National Commissioner of Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, Dr. Vincent Olatunji
said the aim of the privacy week was to sensitise people and disseminate privacy practices and principles across society.

Mr. Olatunji also appealed for the institutionalisation of data protection in the public sector through the issuance of a service-wide circular to all.

According to Dr.Olatunji, “the Bureau has embarked on a sensitisation tour to different, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation and also to keep them abreast of what the Bureau is doing, as enshrined by the law in data protection, and to also get their buy-in.”

He said; “We are taking the lead to ensure that we have a principal law for data protection in the country. What we are doing now is to create awareness. We have visited and trained over 50 public sector organisations .

He commended the Minister for the effort he made to ensure that NDPB was established and also for his efforts in ensuring the approval of the Data Protection Bill by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Olatunji encouraged Nigerians to own up to their responsibilities in order to bring about a culture of data privacy.

The Global Data Privacy Day 2023 has as its a theme: “Think Privacy First”.

The day is marked every January 28 and Nigeria is the first African country to join the developed countries in celebrating the day.

Data Privacy Day is a day that has been set aside to create awareness of fundamental rights and freedoms relating to the privacy of citizens in the data processing ecosystem.
