President Tinubu Directs VP Shettima To Kebbi Over Schoolgirls Abduction

By: Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit Kebbi State on Wednesday to reassure guardians and families of the abducted schoolgirls of the Nigerian Government’s full commitment to their swift rescue.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with the state government and extended his condolences to the Nigerian military over the death of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other soldiers killed in action while confronting insurgents in Borno State.

He described their sacrifice as noble and deeply painful.

“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am depressed with the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty. May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes.

“I am also depressed that heartless terrorists have disrupted the education of innocent schoolgirls. I have directed the security agencies to act swiftly and bring the girls back to Kebbi State,” President Tinubu added.

The President, who has been briefed extensively by military authorities on both incidents, expressed sadness that the schoolgirls were abducted despite earlier intelligence alerts pointing to a likely bandit attack.

He commended Kebbi State Governor, Mohammed Nasir Idris, for efforts taken to avert the kidnapping and called for stronger vigilance across vulnerable communities.

Decrying the security breach that led to the abduction at the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary boarding School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, President Tinubu appealed to communities, particularly those in conflict-prone areas, to work more closely with security agencies by sharing information and intelligence that could help prevent attacks and enhance local safety.

“Our security forces cannot succeed in protecting us if the people don’t cooperate and share information that will help them keep our communities safe. I urge community leaders and our compatriots across the country, especially those in the theatres of operations, to share useful information.”

He emphasised that security forces cannot operate effectively without the cooperation of citizens.

“Your cooperation is crucial in our fight against these security challenges,” the President added.

It would be recalled that armed men stormed Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary boarding School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, around 4 a.m. on Monday.

During the attack, 25 schoolgirls were abducted, the school’s vice-principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was left dead, and another staff member was injured.

COP11: Nigeria Records Major Gains in Tobacco Control

0

Nigeria has recorded a substantial progress in its tobacco control efforts, unveiling new data and enforcement actions that underscore the country’s commitment to safeguarding public health.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako stated this in Geneva while presenting Nigeria’s high-level statement at the Eleventh Session of the Conference of Parties (COP11) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC).

Dr. Salako reaffirmed “Nigeria’s alignment with the African Group and restated the Federal Government’s commitment to a tobacco-free future.”

He noted that since COP10 in 2024, Nigeria had accelerated the implementation of critical tobacco control reforms with measurable impact.

A major highlight of his statement was the completion of data collection and analysis for the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS 2025), the first since 2012.

According to the Minister, “the latest findings reveal a marked decline in daily tobacco use among adults, demonstrating the effectiveness of national policies, enforcement actions, and widespread public awareness campaigns.

“The GATS 2025 results also showed significant behavioral shifts among smokers. The number of smokers considering quitting due to pictorial health warnings increased from 26.7 percent in 2012 to 43.3 percent in 2025.

“Exposure to second-hand smoke in homes and public places similarly recorded major reductions, pointing to the growing impact of strict smoke-free policies across the country.”

Dr. Salako highlighted new strategic tools being deployed to fast-track the implementation of the National Tobacco Control Act (2015) and its Regulations (2018).

He said;”These tools include the National Tobacco Control Strategic Plan of Action (2024–2028), the National Tobacco Control Communication Strategy (2024–2028), and the National Tobacco Control Enforcement Plan (2024–2028).

“Collectively, they are strengthening national surveillance systems, compliance mechanisms, and multisectoral collaboration.”

“In one of the most significant enforcement actions globally under Article 19 of the WHO FCTC, Nigeria recently imposed a $110 million fine on British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN).”

“The fine, issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), followed multiple violations of the National Tobacco Control Act, its accompanying Regulations, and consumer protection laws.

“This action sends a strong message that the tobacco industry must bear responsibility for actions that undermine public health,” Dr. Salako said, emphasizing the government’s unwavering resolve to check harmful industry practices.

He also announced new regulations by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), which enforce a comprehensive ban on Tobacco Advertising, Promotion, and Sponsorship (TAPS) across films, music videos, television, and digital media.

Reflecting on the COP11 theme, “Healthy planet, healthy future: uniting for a tobacco-free generation,” Dr. Salako said the 20th anniversary of the WHO FCTC presents a unique moment for renewed global solidarity in tackling non-communicable diseases and reducing the environmental burden of tobacco cultivation and consumption.

Despite the progress recorded, the Minister acknowledged ongoing challenges, including uneven enforcement at subnational levels, the emergence of new nicotine products, and persistent interference by the tobacco industry.

However, he stressed that Nigeria “remains unwaveringly committed” to the WHO FCTC and would continue to leverage international collaboration, technical support, and knowledge-sharing to further strengthen tobacco control systems.

Dr. Salako wished delegates productive deliberations as global partners work toward achieving a tobacco-free world.

9th Africa Women Conference Draws Delegates to Accra

0

African women are converging on Accra, Ghana, for the 9th Africa Women Conference (AWC), taking place 19–21 November 2025.

The theme of the conference is: “Legacy Meets Innovation: Women Forging New Pathways for Africa’s Sustainable Development.”

The gathering will advance strategies for integrating AI and digital tools in Africa’s education systems while preserving cultural relevance and equity.

The co-convener of the AWC, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, said the ACCRA 2025 aims to connect generational strength with emerging technologies.

We are here to celebrate the women who have gone ahead of us to water the ground… and explore ways we can leverage technology to ensure that things are done right, women are empowered in the right way.”

Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, AWC Co-Convener

While explaining the choice of venue, Dr. Ahmadu, noted that “Ghana has visa-free policy for all Africans, which is why we chose Ghana. Ghana is one of the West African countries that have a female as their vice president. Historically, Ghana has this pre-linear culture that women are really, really given serious hereditary rights in Ghana.”

Political Inclusion

The Chairperson of Women in Parliament, and member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Fatima Talba, stressed the urgency of political inclusion. She said that “It is basically important, particularly now that we are fighting for a special seat in the National Assembly for women.”

She described the current representation deficit as alarming: “With 469 in the National Assembly… we have only 20 women. Totally bad”.

Hon. Fatima Talba,  Chair Women in Parliament

Talba warned that without numbers, anything that comes for women cannot pass through the National Assembly because women are not in the majority.

Talba linked low representation to poverty, saying that “If you don’t have money, you cannot contest. No matter how beautiful… nobody will care about you.”

She urged political parties to act rather than just giving one woman leader in the midst of 30 men. She advocated for more women in decision making process.

Similarly, the former Minister of State, FCT, and RTL Foundation President, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, expressed high expectations for the conference.

She insisted that women must form a “critical mass in places of decision making, taking and implementation,” warning that “It is not yet Uhuru.”

DR Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu

On the Reserved Seats Bill, Dr. Aliyu, said women will lobby extensively: “We will lobby down to the presidency. We will lobby Mr President. Mr President is a gender-friendly leader.”

She however sounded a note of caution, warning that for the bill to be passed, it must transcend beyond lip service.

As Africa’s women meet in Accra, delegates agree that sustained pressure is necessary to transform representation and technology access. They also agree that Africa’s women must drive transformation across governance, technology and sustainable development.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has accused expelled members of the party of attempting to violently disrupt a legally convened meeting at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

Addressing party leaders after regaining control of the secretariat, Turaki commended PDP members for what he described as their “resilience, courage, and resoluteness” in defending the party’s mandate and safeguarding democracy.

According to him, for more than seven hours, the party’s leadership resisted efforts by “renegade members expelled at the Ibadan national convention”.

“We predicted they would come with armed thugs to disrupt our meetings. God so kind; we were able to contain them effectively. We have driven them out of the secretariat, and as you can see, I have entered my office and assumed leadership as the elected national chairman,” Turaki said.
