It was a solemn yet colourful ceremony in Awka, Anambra State, as the remains of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Professor Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe, were received ahead of his final burial rites.

The late academic, who served as the 15th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution, hailed from the Mgbechi family of Umuashi clan in Umubele village, Awka. His life journey, widely described as one marked by resilience, consistency, and perseverance, reflected a rise from humble beginnings to national prominence in academia.

Delivering the homily, the former Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Professor Emmanuel Chukwu, urged mourners to live upright and purposeful lives. Drawing from the Biblical parable of Lazarus and the rich man, he emphasised the importance of impact over longevity.

“It is not how long one lives, but how well. An impactful life outweighs every other consideration. Though Professor Igwe did not attain the age of 70, he lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation,” the cleric stated.

In his remarks, the Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, welcomed dignitaries from across the country who gathered to honour the late scholar. He described Professor Igwe as a worthy son of the soil who made the state proud through his contributions to education and national development.

The governor reiterated the importance of hard work, discouraging the growing trend of get-rich-quick pursuits among youths. “Whatever you find yourself doing, be steadfast and diligent. Hard work remains the hallmark of excellence, and the Anambra State Government is committed to instilling this value in our youths for a progressive society,” he said.

Residents of Awka expressed deep sorrow over the loss, while also celebrating the late professor’s enduring legacy and contributions to the community and academia.

The academic community from Nsukka and Awka turned out in large numbers to pay their last respects. Among those present were former and current Vice-Chancellors, Professor Charles Esimone and Professor Bond Anyaehie, respectively.

Also in attendance were representatives of Mr Peter Obi– Stella Okunna, Patrick Chukwuma, and Valentine Obienyem, alongside other dignitaries.

Professor Igwe is survived by his wife, Dr. Ngozi Igwe, his children, and numerous relatives.
