Stakeholders in cultural exchange, media, and diplomacy have emphasised the growing importance of language as a tool for global connection, cooperation, and cultural and strategic partnership between China and Nigeria as well as the globe.

This was disclosed at the commemoration of the 2026 International Chinese Language Day, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The event brought together stakeholders from across sectors to celebrate the richness of Chinese language and its role in strengthening ties between nations.

In his welcome address, the Director, China Cultural Center in Nigeria, Yang Jiaxin, described the Chinese language as a timeless bridge connecting civilisations across generations and continents. He highlighted the Chinese language’s global reach, underscoring the role of Chinese in fostering harmony, cooperation and opportunity.

“Learning Chinese is undoubtedly an important shortcut to fully understanding China and realising one’s dreams through participation in mutually beneficial cooperation. Chinese is not only a ‘gift across time’ but also a ‘golden bridge’ connecting people’s hearts. Over 200 million people worldwide are learning the language,” he said.

He described the Chinese language as a living legacy spanning thousands of years.

“Spring is in full bloom, and all things are vibrant with life. Today, we gather to celebrate the 17th International Chinese Language Day. Standing at this juncture connecting the past and the future, let us experience the unique charm of the Chinese language that transcends time and space,” he said.

The Envoy further stressed that Chinese characters are deeply rooted in history and culture.

“Every Chinese character is not only a symbol of communication but also a historical memory and a crystallisation of wisdom,” Yang stated.

According to Yang, the celebration coincided with “Grain Rain”, a traditional solar term in the Chinese calendar linked to it, emphasising the deep historical roots of the language.

“Chinese is the genetic link that carries the torch of 5,000 years of Chinese civilisation. Every Chinese character is not only a symbol of communication but also a historical memory and a crystallisation of wisdom,” he added.

Also speaking, the Director General, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr Mohammed Bulama, emphasised the broader significance of language in global unity.

“Language is more than words—it is the soul of a people, the vessel of history, and the architecture of thought. The Chinese language stands as one of humanity’s most enduring cultural treasures. May the Chinese language continue to flourish as a beacon of cultural pride and a pathway to shared global progress,” he said.

Dr. Bulama highlighted the role of the media in bridging cultural divides, noting that the corporation broadcasts in over 25 languages and reaches millions of listeners.

He referenced the “Ni Hao China” radio programme, launched in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy.

“The programme is aimed at teaching Mandarin, promoting Chinese culture, and strengthening bilateral ties between Nigeria and China. May the Chinese language continue to flourish as a beacon of cultural pride and a pathway to shared global progress,” Bulama added.

According to him, the initiative stems from agreements reached during President’s visit to China in 2024, aimed at enhancing trade, tourism, and communication.

Similarly, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Grace Ike, stressed that the event is a platform for strengthening cultural diplomacy.

“This event beautifully underscores the power of language as a bridge for cultures. As journalists, we witness daily how effective communication dissolves barriers, amplifies voices, and builds enduring partnerships,” she emphasised.

She also commended the Chinese Embassy and the Cultural Centre for maintaining strong relations with Nigerian journalists, noting that such collaboration has enhanced balanced reporting and cultural storytelling.

“Your unwavering support, openness, and collaborative spirit have enabled balanced reporting, cultural exchanges, and insightful stories that strengthen Nigeria-China ties,” Ike added.

The event also marked the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

Participants expressed optimism that language learning and cultural exchange would continue to deepen cooperation across sectors, including media, education, and trade.

The celebration featured cultural exhibitions, language demonstrations, and interactive sessions aimed at promoting greater appreciation of Chinese language and heritage among Nigerians.
