Lekan Sowande, Abuja

The Nigerian Senate on Monday held a public hearing on the N58.47 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill.

The session, part of a broader review process initiated after President Bola Tinubu presented the budget on December 19, 2025, aims to gather input from stakeholders, including Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), industry leaders, and development partners.

With the theme: “From Budget to Impact: Strengthening Microeconomic Stability, Accelerating Infrastructure Delivery, and Improving Security through Fiscal Discipline and Effective Implementation of 2026 Budget.”

Professor Wasiu Adeoye of the University of Lagos presented an analysis of the budget proposal during the hearing.

The session also witnessed presentations from the country’s economic management team, led by the Ministry of Finance.

Budget defence at the Committee level by the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) is currently ongoing and will be rounded up on February 13, 2026.

The proposed 2026 budget, titled “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” includes a N34.33 trillion revenue projection, a N58.18 trillion total expenditure, and a N23.85 trillion deficit.

The Senate Committee on Appropriations, chaired by Senator Solomon Adeola, has targeted March 17, 2026, for the final passage of the budget by the National Assembly.

The Senate is working to ensure thorough scrutiny of the budget, with reports from committee-level defences due between February 16 and February 23, 2026.
