Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has called on Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu in its efforts to tackle security challenges.
Gowon appealed on Saturday in Makurdi, during the grand finale of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Benue State, where he served as the Special Guest of Honour.
He described the nation’s security challenges as largely man-made, expressing optimism that the situation is temporary and can be overcome through collective commitment and unity.
Reflecting on the creation of Benue State, the former military ruler recalled that the process began during his administration and was eventually concluded in 1976 under the regime of the late General Murtala Muhammed, when Benue was carved out of the former Plateau State.
According to him, the decision to create Benue has been justified by the state’s remarkable contributions to national development through distinguished sons and daughters who have excelled in various fields, both within and outside Nigeria.

Gowon said his selection as Special Guest of Honour for the golden jubilee celebration was significant.
The former Head of State noted that the occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate Benue’s achievements and reflect on its developmental journey and comparative advantages.
He also paid tribute to the late Colonel Joseph Akahan, a former Chief of Army Staff, who died in a helicopter crash while returning from Benue after delivering Civil War directives to the Brigade Commander in Makurdi.
Describing Benue as one of Nigeria’s most beautiful states, Gowon highlighted its vast agricultural potential and suitability for livestock production.
He, however, noted that competition over scarce resources has contributed to the persistent security challenges confronting the state.
The elder statesman expressed confidence that Joseph Tarka University, Makurdi, would become a centre for technological innovation, research and development.
Also speaking at the event, former Nigerian Vice President, Namadi Sambo described the golden jubilee as a celebration of Benue’s rich history, resilience, cultural heritage and contributions to nation-building.
He noted that Benue has earned its reputation as the nation’s food basket due to its fertile land, hardworking people and abundant human and natural resources.
