Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated the eighth Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), charging its members to drive institutional reforms, strengthen governance and raise academic standards at the state-owned university.

“You have a lot of heavy lifting to do. Work with integrity, conscientiousness and passion. Consider what is best for the university and future generations. What matters is what changes for the better during your tenure,” the Governor explained.
Soludo said the council was assuming office at a pivotal moment in the university’s history, citing governance and administrative challenges that require urgent attention. He also raised concerns about the integrity of recent academic recruitment exercises, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in university management.
The governor expressed confidence in the council’s leadership under its Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Peter A. Onwualu.
“With Professor Peter Onwualu as Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, your problems are solved. Take the university to realise its full potential. With the calibre of men and women on this council, you will succeed,” he stated.

The council comprises external members, Dr Chris Oranu Chidume, Prof. O. J. Ogbuagu, Chief Christopher Ndubuisi and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Chris Ezike.
Internal members include Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Environmental Sustainability), Prof. A. C. Speaking on behalf of the council, Onwualu pledged to pursue reforms aimed at transforming COOU into one of Nigeria’s leading state universities.
“This will be a different council. We intend to make COOU one of the top three state universities in the country. We are determined to build a strong and globally competitive university,” he said.
He also appealed for continued government support to help achieve the council’s objectives.
The inauguration reflects the Soludo administration’s broader higher education reform agenda, aimed at strengthening public institutions and aligning them with global best practices.
