Cleric Praises Macaulay’s Legacy of Unity Across Nigeria

The Very Reverend Segun Ladehinde has described Nigeria’s ability to unite through the efforts of past leaders, such as Herbert Macaulay, as one of the country’s enduring models for national cohesion.

Speaking at the 80th Herbert Macaulay Memorial service, Very Reverend Segun Ladehinde said Macaulay fostered national unity through the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), which united people from the West and East under one movement.

According to him, Macaulay built a platform that united Nigerians beyond tribe and region.

Very Rev. Ladehinde added that Macaulay reflected the same spirit of unity demonstrated by his grandfather, Bishop Ajayi Crowther, who was known for his extensive missionary work in the East.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the legacy they would leave behind with ordinary people.

The memorial, organised by the Diocese of Lagos, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), was held to honour Dr. Macaulay’s legacy as a nationalist, journalist and Church man.

Also speaking at the service, Reverend Samson Ojewunmi urged Nigerians to live out “Kingdom Compassion” as a way to sustain the unity Macaulay stood for.

He said true Christianity means showing mercy, forgiving others, helping the needy and serving without expecting reward.

Rev. Ojewunmi listed pride, selfishness, unforgiveness and lack of love as barriers to compassion.

When we show compassion, we are like God. It makes people praise God and it brings unity among us,” he said.

The Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, hosted the 80th memorial to remember Dr. Macaulay’s contribution to Nigeria’s political and spiritual foundation.
