House of Representatives supports initiatives to accelerate gas utilization

The Nigerian House of Representatives says it will continue to support all initiatives aimed at accelerating investments in the production and processing liquefied gas in the country.

This was to consolidate the nation’s gas export opportunities and enhance gas utilization in the country.

The Chairman House Committee on Gas Resources, Mr Mutuh Nicholas stated this at an interactive session with the management of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company, NLNG.

Mr Nicholas, who commended the contribution of NLNG to Nigerian revenue said the House would continue to partner with NLNG and other relevant agencies to improve on the nation’s revenue.

“The Committee is also keen on promoting optimization of resources by the re-utilization of by-products to enhance the gas value chain and create opportunities for those in the downstream of the value chain. In this regard, we call on you to provide data and strategies to support off-taker to re-use products from your production processes, which as you know, would be feedstock to other industries. The object is to create opportunities, jobs, and livelihoods by stimulating the growth of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.” Mr Mutuh added.

The committee commended the NLNG management for the signing of Final Investment Decision, FID and the establishment of Train 7 project that would keep Nigeria at the top of global LNG producers and exporters list.

Mr Mutuh said “In addition to the foregoing the huge contributions of the NLNG to the Nigerian economy in revenue contribution, research, technology, man-power, community development and the promotion of literature and the Arts, to mention a few, cannot be overemphasized.

We are thus looking forward to working with your team and other stakeholders to use the Business Model and the wealth of experience of NLNG to formulate new legislation and incentives that will assist to efficiently harness the gas resources in Nigeria for the all-round development of the nation’s economy.” 

The Managing Director, NLNG, Mr Anthony Attah stressed the need for legislation that would improve the prospects of Nigeria in the global gas sector.

He said that NLNG had in the last two decades exported over forty-five thousands gas vessels to global market making the country the 6th Global Gas exporter.
