The Kwara Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has concluded arrangements to honour one of its formal chairmen, Jide Fashikun.

In a statement, the State Secretary of the Association, Olayinka Owolewa, said part of the programmes to honour him include a memorial lecture as well as football competition among some media houses in the state.

According to the statement, the football competition is tagged, ‘Jide Fashikun U-17 Memorial Tournament.’

The chairman of the local organising committee (LOC), Shogo Shodunke, while briefing journalists on Thursday in Ilorin said the football competition was scheduled to commence from Monday, Feb. 22.

Shodunke explained that ‘‘since no 17 year-old child is a journalist yet, the teams are sourced locally and named after some media houses in the state.”

He said match day 1 would have NUJ lock horns with Radio Kwara at 2pm (local time) while NTA and The Herald take to the field at 4pm (local time).

According to him, Tuesday, February 23, is set aside for the memorial lecture while the final of the football competition will come up on Thursday, February 24 at the Main Bowl of the Kwara Stadium Complex, Ilorin at 4pm (local time).

The statement appealed to all sports stakeholders in the state to attend and honour the late Fashikun whose contributions to sports development in Nigeria is immeasurable.

Fashikun died in Abuja on Sunday, January 27, 2019 during a brief illness.
