The President of the Food Growers Association of Nigeria, (FOGAN) King Joseph Owolabi said it’s time to provide the farmers with technical and input support in order to attain food sufficiency in the country. He stated this during a media briefing in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Mr. Owolabi disclosed that the association would be training grassroots farmers in modern farming techniques, provide modern farming equipment such as tractor, harvester’s and sprayers for farmers while also providing fertilizers, insecticide and seeds at affordable prices.

He said the association would work to compliment the efforts of the government

“We cannot just fold our arms expect government to bring food to our table, as farmers we have our own role to play as artificial stakeholders. The association therefore is partnering with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development to provide sprayers, seeds, tractors and other equipment at affordable rate”

He said the association plans to work with unemployed youth by making lands available for them to farming through partnership with the traditional rulers and the National Agricultural Land Development Authority NALDA.

On tackling post-harvest losses, the Mr. Owolabi said plans are on ground to provide silos in all the 774 local governments in the country to store perishable and non-perishable crops while adding that the association would partner off takers such as Agro industry to off take directly from the farmers thereby providing available market for their produce.
