Supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State on Wednesday, staged a procession captioned, freedom walk, for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in Ibadan, the state capital.
The freedom walk, which started at 10am, took off from the Total Garden Roundabout, headed towards the Agodi Gate Area through Oje, Beere, and terminated at the historical Mapo Hill, all in Ibadan, where the organisers addressed the supporters.
The walk was led by the trio of a former Minister of State for the FCT, Jumoke Akinjide; a former Minister of Power and Steel, Wole Oyelese and a former deputy governor of the state, Hazeem Gbolarumi.
Addressing the crowd, Akinjide asserted that the entire Oyo State is for PDP and urged the residents to vote all PDP candidates across board to ensure a massive flow of dividends of democracy and expansion of the state’s economy, noting that when Atiku becomes president, Oyo State would be the first state to benefit from the former Vice President’s administration.
She however called on the people not to accept any other presidential candidate apart from the party’s choice and urged them not to listen to anyone who wants to denigrate the party’s presidential candidate, referring to the 5 aggrieved PDP governors, also known as the G-5, who had been at loggerheads with the party’s presidential candidate, demanding the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
Akinjide stated: “Tomorrow, we shall flag off Governor Seyi Makinde’s second term campaign, but some visitors are coming and if they want to disparage Atiku, we shall say no.”
In his remark, Hazeem Gbolarumi, pleaded with the supporters to vote Atiku Abubakar and avoid fighting anybody, stressing that there was no reason for PDP members to fight one another as, according to him, only people who were trying to prevent them from supporting PDP deserved to be fought.
The PDP campaign coordinator in the South, Tunji Adeniji, who represented Atiku Abubakar, highlighted the agenda of the PDP presidential candidate which, according to him, includes security of lives and property, unity of the country, education, restructuring and resuscitation of the country’s economy, saying Ibadan, being the headquarters of the southwest, is very important to the victory of Atiku Abubakar in the forthcoming presidential election.
He described Atiku as a unifier who would put a stop to nepotism, tribalism and religious discrimination if voted in, berating the APC-led government for the country’s poor economy and promised that Atiku would open all land borders and ensure devolution of power to the state’s, while ensuring local government autonomy.
