Nasarawa government Urges Young Generation to Sustain Eggon Cultural Heritage

The Nasarawa state government has urged the young generation in Eggon Land to sustain its cultural heritage for the social behavior of society.

The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mr. Lawal Yakubu stated this during the 2023 Galle Day celebration held in the Galle community, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government of the state.

He said that “Culture is not negotiable, from the traditional dancers, costume, hunters, and traditional food, these will remind you of what the culture stands for”.

“As the government, we are trying to package a cultural carnival in the state”,
Commissioner added.

He, however, urged the people of the Galle community to always support the re-election bid of Governor Abdullahi Sule for good governance and continuity.

Speaking as the chairman of the Day, Executive Director Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational Technology Institute(WCAIVTI), Dr. Daniel Asele, commended the efforts of the organizer in promoting, encouraging, and imparting culture to its people.

“It is a fact that if you want to destroy and kill a people, you do not need to use guns all you need is to starve and destroy their culture”,

“Culture is the ideas, customs and social behavior of a particular people or society”,

“Culture is the lifeblood of a vibrant society, expressed in the many ways such as the way we tell our stories, celebrate, remember the past, entertain ourselves, and imagine the future”, Dr. Asele stated.

He however laments the fast decaying of culture adding that the missionaries that pioneered Western Education in Nigeria were unable to popularize African culture.

Dr. Asele further commended Governor Abdullahi Sule who is a lover of culture and its preservation, established and equipped craft and skills training centers across the state to impart employable skills, crafts, and entrepreneurial spirit to the Youth, Women, the vulnerable, and all citizenry of the state as the Institute also serves as 2 hubs for the preservation of culture, especially in the area of Arts and Crafts.

Delivering a keynote address, the speaker, lecturer, Benue state university, Makurdi, Dr. Simon Oryila dwells on the theme, “Sustaining Our Cultural Heritage: A Case for the Younger Generation.”

According to Dr. Oryila, the theme of this year’s celebration is timely for many reasons. The cultural heritage of most ethnic groups in Nigeria is in sharp decline and decay, requiring urgent actions by critical stakeholders, such as the Eggon Cultural and Development Association, to salvage the situation.

Also, the chairman, of Eggon Cultural and Development Association( ECDA), Galle branch, Umar Abdullahi-Galle, expressed appreciation for all the people of Nasarawa state and beyond who grace the 2023 Galle Day Celebration.
