The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, has urged corps members to desist from meddling in the local politics of host communities.
The DG NYSC stated this during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch A stream 1 orientation course of the NYSC members in Minna, Niger State capital, North Central Nigeria.
“I enjoin you to perform your duties with diligence and be guided by the provision of the NYSC Act and by-laws as well as workplace rules and regulations in keeping with the objectives of the scheme,” Ahmed said.
He further advised the members to integrate with their host communities by undertaking in personal and group community development service projects that will help to uplift their living standards while appreciating and respecting their cultures.
The DG NYSC who appreciated the participation of the corps members in the entrepreneurship training schemes further encouraged them to build on the skills acquired by availing themselves of the opportunities for post camp training.
“The NYSC will continue to liaise with financial institutions and other stakeholders with the view to providing start-up loans to enable corp members to actualize their business dreams“.
Security Consciousness
Àhmed further urged the Batch A stream 1 corps members to be security conscious at all times, as security is everyone’s business.
“You should avoid acts that can endanger your lives such as staying out late, attending night parties, visitation of dangerous places, and acceptance of car rides and gifts from strangers”.
He said the NYSC is committed to making adequate provisions for the security and general welfare of the corps members in line with the policy thrust of his administration of the DG of the NYSC.
Ahmed who further warned the members of the negative side of social media urged them to be wary of acts that can portray the scheme in a bad light, like drug abuse and trafficking, cybercrime, advance fee fraud and spreading of fake news among others.
“The 2023 elections are around the corner, as was the case of the previous elections, corps members will form the majority of the ad hoc personnel that will be enlisted for the conduct of the exercise, as such you should take a cue from your predecessors by performing the election duties with high sense of responsibility”.
The NYSC zonal coordinator in Niger State North Central Nigeria, Alhaji Mahmud Hassan Taura, appreciated the gesture by the DG NYSC to the special guest for the closing ceremony of the batch A stream 1 corps members.
Mallam Taura who enumerated the challenges faced in the NYSC camp, however, thanked the DG for approving the works and upgrading of the office accommodation and the entire NYSC Camp in Niger State.
