Voting in the 2023 Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections has ended in most polling units across Rivers State and sorting and counting of votes are underway.

Voice of Nigeria reports that the early closure of voting was due to low turnout of voters in polling units in the State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s Presiding Officer at Rumuobiakani Ward 4 Polling Unit 49 and 54, Sonia Okoro also attributed the early closure to low turnout of voters.

Other polling units in the State such as Woji Ward 6 Polling Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16, 17 and Rumuomasi Units 10, 11, 36, 45, 51 in Obio Akpor also recorded early closures.

Meanwhile, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has suspended the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections in Asari-Toru and Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

INEC’s Head of Voter Education, Mike Usolo explained that the suspension was due to the commission’s inability to distribute electoral materials to the affected LGAs.
