As the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, prepares to mark its 50th anniversary, the Director General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed has pledged to improve the skills acquisition scheme which is aimed at self-reliance.

The Director General stated these during a Unity Walk in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of NYSC, with activities set to commence on Monday 15th May, 2023.

Ahmed while Speaking on the significance of the scheme to the development of the country said that the NYSC  has contributed immensely to the unity of the country and also to the socio-economic, educational, political and health sectors.

“Generally, we have done a lot. You can see the last election we have done well. Without the Corps Members that election would have been impossible because they formed over 75 percent of the ad hoc staff.

“We also have skill acquisition. Corps Members after passing from their youth service, they become entrepreneurs and instead of depending on the government for employment they turn out to be employers of labour.

“We want to carry out a transformational changes in terms of skills acquisition so that a lot of these corps members after service will no longer come back and wait for government work.

“They will depend on their own, they will establish their own business, they will turn out to be employers of labour, most importantly with the setting of NYSC Trust Fund, that will give NYSC opportunity to achieve this objective,” he added.

The NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa disclosed that the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo would be the special guest at the opening ceremony/50th anniversary lecture while the wife of the President, Dr Aisha Buhari would serve as the special guest on Tuesday 16th May, 2023 under the event titled; “Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) Outreach.
