Government inaugurates Governing Councils of Polytechnics, Colleges of Education

The Nigerian Government has inaugurated the Governing Councils of 25 Federal Polytechnics and 21 Federal Colleges of Education.
Speaking during the inauguration in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, stated that the reconstitution of the governing council of these institutions came at a time in the country when the repositioning of the higher education system was needed to ensure that students acquire the right skills and competencies to drive diverse sectors of the economy.
Adamu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Arc Sonny Echono, charged the governing councils to address the worrisome decline in academic standards and examination malpractice.
He tasked the councils to address the issue of the unstable academic calendar, especially the challenge of frequent industrial actions by the staff unions of the institutions
Minister called on them to ensure that transparency and due process become their watchword as they select suitable leaders in their various institutions.
On the issue of funding, he urged them to explore new revenue sources, outside government to improve their operations while ensuring financial discipline.
