The Nigerian Red Cross Society has distributed essential non-food relief items to 100 families in Mokwa, Niger State, in a bid to ease their suffering and restore a sense of dignity following a catastrophic flood.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday in Abuja by Mr Chima Nwankwo, Head of Communications for the society.
According to Nwankwo, the floods, which struck Mokwa on 29 May, claimed over 150 lives and displaced hundreds. In response, the Red Cross provided lifesaving assistance to the affected households.

“Each household received plastic buckets and jerry cans for safe water storage, mobile taps to support proper hand washing and hygiene, and a pack of Aquatabs, water purification tablets that kill harmful microorganisms.
“They also received sleeping mats, blankets, camp beds, and shelter kits containing tools and materials needed to build temporary shelters,” Nwankwo stated.

He quoted the Secretary General of the society, Abubakar Kende, who emphasised the importance of the support.
“These items are essential for families trying to rebuild their lives after such a devastating event,” Kende said.
“Clean water, proper hygiene, and shelter are not luxuries, they are lifesaving.”
Kende added that the society would continue to collaborate closely with local authorities, including the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to monitor the evolving situation and coordinate further relief efforts.
“More distributions are scheduled in the coming days to reach additional communities affected by the floods,” he said.
