The Nigerian Union of Journalists has commemorated its 70th anniversary with the launch of a publication and the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to distinguished individuals.
The event, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, was graced by journalists from the 36 states of the federation, award recipients, veteran journalists, and stakeholders in the media industry.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, noted in his goodwill message that the Nigerian press played a vital role in reporting the circumstances surrounding June 12, holding past governments accountable, and ensuring justice.
He stated that the role of the media in promoting national cohesion and development cannot be overemphasised.
The Minister observed that the rise of mobile phones and citizen journalism has raised critical questions about who qualifies as a journalist, an issue he said must be addressed to preserve the profession’s credibility.
Idris added that the Bola Tinubu administration is aware of the challenges facing Nigerian journalists, including welfare issues, gender imbalance, and limited access to technology, and is committed to working with the media to address these concerns.
He also emphasised the importance of journalists telling their own stories to counter false narratives.
Also speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, said the NUJ, established in 1955, has been a driving force behind the actualisation of Nigeria’s independence and the promotion of national development.
He thanked members of the Union for upholding the dignity of the profession by maintaining professional standards in the discharge of their duties.
The Father of the Day, veteran journalist and former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Segun Osoba, noted that although the Union has faced difficult times over the years, it has survived them all and remains one united family, flying the flag and setting the agenda for national development across media organisations.
He urged members to take advantage of digital technology to enhance accurate and professional information sharing, thereby curbing the spread of misinformation often found on some online platforms.
Award recipients included past national presidents of the Union, serving and former governors, and members of the legislature.
