The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has raised serious concern over the growing impact of drug abuse on children and young people, warning that the crisis is eroding the moral and social fabric of society.
In a statement to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Dr. Soludo described drug abuse as a “complex problem” and a grave threat to the future of the younger generation. She called for urgent, coordinated action from all stakeholders to tackle the menace.
She emphasized the need for stronger preventive strategies, community engagement, and support systems to shield young people from the lure of drug use and addiction.
“Drug abuse is a complex challenge that has continued to erode the social purpose of our society,” she said. “It is a terrifying crisis that has caught us dangerously off guard. The statistics are alarming.”
She highlighted the link between drug abuse and organized crime, emphasizing that any society where drug misuse thrives is at risk of increased criminality and moral decay.
“The proliferation of drugs, especially in our schools and among children , is a war we must fight with renewed strategies and vigilance,” she added. “It is devastating the future of our youth, the very generation we are working hard to protect.”
Through her non-governmental organization, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, the First Lady said her team has remained actively engaged in promoting health and education as key tools for prevention and rehabilitation.
“Our initiative is on the front lines of this crisis, working tirelessly to drive education and healthcare efforts aimed at both prevention and recovery,” she noted. “We’re also collaborating with organized groups, government agencies, and committed individuals to reach more communities — especially school children, who remain particularly vulnerable.”
Dr. Soludo called on parents, guardians, educators, and community leaders to take shared responsibility in combating the drug menace.
“This is a fight we cannot win alone,” she said. “Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, teacher, or policymaker, you have a role to play. Drugs are robbing us of our future. Together, we must break the chains.”
World Drug Day, marked annually on June 26, aims to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a drug-free world.
