Ronaldo equals Ali Daei’s international scoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo’s two penalties saw Portugal book their place in the last-16 of Euro 2020 as his Portugal side battled to a 2-2 draw against France in Budapest.

With Hungary beating Germany for large parts of their Munich clash, Portugal appeared to be staring elimination in the face as two goals from Karim Benzema either side of half time put the world champions 2-1 up.

But Ronaldo and co were given a lifeline as Jules Kounde handballed the star man’s cross from the left. Ronaldo, who had smashed in a spot-kick on 30 minutes, made no mistake again as he levelled the scores.

The strike also saw him equal Ali Daei’s all-time international goal record of 109. Portugal finished third in Group F, and will face Belgium in the last 16 on Sunday night. France came top of the ‘Group of Death’.

Germany’s 2-2 draw against Hungary saw them come second and set up a last-16 tie with England at Wembley on Tuesday.

It was a marvelous spectacle at the Puskas Arena as Ronaldo broke the deadlock on the half hour mark with an emphatic penalty after Hugo Lloris was penalized for punching Danilo Pereira in the box.

Les Bleus levelled the scores on the stroke of half time with a penalty of their own. Karim Benzema slotted it home after Nelson Semedo was adjudged to have fouled Kylian Mbappe.

And Benzema got his second two minutes after the restart as he got on the end of Paul Pogba’s stunning pass and struck in-off the post. It appeared the goal wouldn’t stand but a VAR review revealed that the Real Madrid star was onside.

Ronaldo equalized on the hour but France almost won it but for two excellent saves by Rui Patricio. First, he tipped Pogba’s spellbinding curling effort onto the post before parrying Antoine Griezmann’s fierce rebound away.

France were unlucky not to get a penalty in stoppage-time as Bruno Fernandes stood on Kingsley Coman in the box as both sides settled for a point.
