Minister Constitutes Panel To Probe Abuja-Kaduna Train Accident

Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali has constituted a committee of experts to investigate the August 26, 2025 passenger train derailment at Jare Station, near Abuja.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety and strengthen Nigeria’s rail operations.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Janet McDickson Noah, the Director of Press and Information, Federal Ministry of Transportation.

According to the statement, “Senator Alkali has directed the formation of a committee consisting of all stakeholders to investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident.

“The committee will also make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future and identify ways to improve the safety and effectiveness of rail transportation in Nigeria.”

The committee is chaired by Mr. Musa Ibrahim, with members including Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC); Professor Danwaka Shuaibu, Special Technical Adviser to the Minister; Zirra Finbar; and Omotola Olusegun, Director of Legal Services at the Federal Ministry of Transportation, who will also serve as Member/Secretary.

Other members are Ebuniwe, Railway Inspector; representatives of Technics Engineering Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd; China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC); Civil Society Organisations; as well as male and female passengers

Before the inauguration of the committee, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) had already commenced a separate inquiry into the derailment, confirming that six passengers sustained injuries but no fatalities were recorded.
