In the lead-up to the November 8 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, two incumbent lawmakers have defected from their parties to join the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

The members, Mr Henry Mbachu of Awka South Constituency I (previously of the Labour Party) and Mr Bernard Udemezue of Ayamelum Constituency (previously of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP), announced their move during a campaign tour by the YPP candidate.

In a video address, Mr Mbachu stated his defection was a “carefully thought-out” decision made in the best interest of his constituents.

“I am going to work with the candidate who has presented the best manifesto… A candidate who represents the young minds, a candidate who presented an understandable blueprint on how to develop Anambra from consumption to production.”

Mbachu highlighted that Chukwuma’s agenda aligned with his own legislative goals and appealed to the youth demographic.

His defection comes alongside that of Mr Bernard Udemezue, a vocal figure recently suspended from the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Udemezue assured the YPP campaign team of his “total commitment” to ensure Chukwuma’s victory in November.

The two lawmakers are now positioned as key figures in YPP’s campaign to reposition the state.
