The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and climate-tech firm Ignitia are taking the next steps in their recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at improving weather prediction and agricultural resilience across Nigeria.
A delegation from Ignitia, led by Mr. Yen Choi, visited NiMet headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, to begin discussions on how to roll out the agreement.
Welcoming the team, NiMet Director-General/CEO Prof. Charles Anosike highlighted the agency’s exclusive mandate to provide and regulate weather and climate information in the country.
He pledged NiMet’s readiness to grant licenses and access to trusted private-sector partners like Ignitia.
The collaboration will focus on training NiMet staff in artificial intelligence applications for weather forecasting and developing more accurate advisories to support farmers’ decision-making.
Both sides agreed to set up a joint technical committee within a month to draft a detailed implementation roadmap.
The roadmap will define phased activities, key benchmarks and metrics to measure the partnership’s impact.
By harnessing AI tools, the initiative aims to deliver more precise forecasts, helping farmers boost productivity and adapt to changing climate conditions.
