The Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, in Abuja has suspended its warning strike following a resolution with the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Health Secretariat, the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, has announced.

Dr. Fasawe briefed journalists in Abuja, confirming that the FCT Minister has approved the payment of health workers’ allowances and the employment of additional doctors to strengthen the territory’s healthcare system.

Over 37 doctors have already been employed, with plans to hire close to 300 more healthcare professionals in the shortest possible time,” she said.

Dr. Fasawe stressed that administrative procedures would be meticulously followed to ensure a lasting solution and prevent future agitation.

In every organisation, both public and private sectors, there is documentation, uploading, verification to ensure the payment system is not distorted. The good thing about the Minister’s approval is that we will not have this agitation again. Employing more doctors is already in effect, and we are prioritising this,” she explained.

Dr. Fasawe further noted that the measures put in place would ensure sustainability.

She added that “Every allowance will be paid automatically in the future. This is not a quick fix; it is a sustainable system to avoid recurrent strikes next year.”

The ARD President, Dr. Osundayo Zenith expressed gratitude to the FCT Minister for attending to the doctors’ demands.

He described the strike as a necessary step to highlight challenges in the health sector rather than a political move.

The essence of our action was to draw the Minister’s attention, and he responded generously. We appreciate him for prioritising healthcare, approving our demands, and being a father to the sector.

“We also commend the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Fasawe for her role in resolving the issues,” Dr. Zenith said.

He said that the development marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare delivery in the FCT, assuring residents of continuous medical services while setting the stage for further improvements in the health sector.
