The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has signed a ₦75.1 billion supplementary appropriation bill alongside a new Environmental Sector Law aimed at boosting governance, service delivery, and environmental sustainability.

At a ceremony held in the Council Chambers of the Government House, Dutse, Governor Namadi said the supplementary budget provides additional revenue measures for both the state and its 27 local government areas.

“Today, we have signed into law the supplementary appropriation bill for the state government and that of the 27 local governments, a total of ₦75.1 billion, comprising ₦58 billion for the state and ₦17.1 billion for the local governments,” the Governor said.

He explained that the additional spending was in line with constitutional provisions requiring legislative approval before funds can be expended. He commended the State Executive Council for approving the bill and the House of Assembly for its swift passage.

“I want to sincerely thank the members of the House of Assembly, under the leadership of the Honourable Speaker, for the professionalism and speed with which they handled the bill. This demonstrates the strong partnership between the executive and the legislature in driving progress for the people of Jigawa,” Namadi explained.

He also praised ministries, departments, and agencies for their diligence and cooperation throughout the process.

On the Environmental Sector Law, the governor said the legislation provides a comprehensive framework for the protection, conservation, and sustainable use of the state’s natural resources. It covers areas including pollution prevention, waste management, forest conservation, bush-burning control, wildlife protection, and responsible resource use.

Under the law, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, working with other agencies, is mandated to safeguard Jigawa’s environmental heritage for present and future generations.

Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to balancing economic growth with sustainability and the welfare of citizens.

“Our priority is to ensure that progress in infrastructure and economic growth goes hand in hand with sustainability and the protection of our natural environment,” he stated.

The details were contained in a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Gumel.
