The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu says the Corps of Military Police must continue to lead by example as the custodian of discipline and regimentation within the Nigerian Army.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said this while declaring open the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police (NACMP) Biannual Training Workshop 2025 at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Abuja.
The Army Chief highlighted that the workshop, which has been reintroduced following the identification of deficiencies in professional competencies, is intended to support ongoing professional development and to enhance the capabilities of Corps personnel in alignment with Nigerian Army operations.
He noted that “the increasingly dynamic and asymmetric nature of modern warfare demands a holistic and flexible approach, integrating lessons from field operations with intellectual reflection and doctrinal innovation.”
“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nation. As the Corps of Military Police, you must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct at all times,” Lieutenant General Shaibu affirmed.
He further encouraged participants to use the lectures and interactive sessions to broaden knowledge, sharpen skills, and rededicate themselves to service, discipline, and integrity.
The Army Chief also commended the Provost Marshal (Army) and leadership of the Corps for organising the first biannual training workshop since 2013, highlighting their “commitment to restoring a vital tradition that aligns with the Nigerian Army’s vision for professionalism and accountability.”
He was represented at the event by the Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro.
Distinguished resource persons were acknowledged for sharing knowledge and experiences that will strengthen the Corps’ operational and policing capabilities.
The Provost Marshal (Army), Major General Mathias Erebulu, emphasised that the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police must enhance capabilities and professionalism to meet contemporary security challenges.
He said; “it is the first comprehensive training workshop for the Corps since 2013 which provides a platform for exchanging ideas, strategic thinking, and knowledge sharing to empower personnel to effectively respond to evolving operational demands.”
Major General Erebulu highlighted the urgency of refocusing attention on professionalism, operational effectiveness, and inter-agency collaboration in today’s dynamic security environment.
“The theme of this year’s workshop, ‘Enhancing the Professional Competence of the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police Personnel to Effectively Discharge Their Responsibilities in a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,’ underscores our commitment to equipping our personnel with the skills and insight necessary to maintain law, order, and discipline across all operational theatres,” he said.
The Provost Marshal outlined that lectures would cover investigations, regimentation, discipline, and the prevention of arms and ammunition leakage.
He stressed that the Corps must continuously strengthen its institutional capacity and adapt to emerging security threats while supporting joint operations to enhance the Nigerian Army’s overall effectiveness.
Major General Erebulu also acknowledged the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his unwavering support and vision.
He noted that his guidance had been instrumental in fostering growth and operational excellence across all formations, including the Corps of Military Police.
The workshop aims to stimulate critical thinking, reinforce professional competence, and prepare the Corps of Military Police to function effectively in joint and multi-agency operational environments.
