The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with Landmark University following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to strengthen climate research, improve meteorological data capacity, and deepen climate science education across Nigeria.

The collaboration aims to enhance the collection, analysis, and application of climate data while driving initiatives that promote environmental resilience and sustainable national development.

It will also advance policy advocacy and broaden academic programmes that integrate climate science into university curricula.

At the signing ceremony, the Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the initiative as a vital step in supporting NiMet’s mandate to improve data-driven predictions and early warning systems.

He explained that the partnership will boost research in critical areas such as drought monitoring, flood analysis, and agricultural planning, key factors for mitigating climate-related risks.

On his part, the Pro-Chancellor of Landmark University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for joint research and innovation.

He noted that Landmark University will engage actively in research collaborations, staff exchange programmes, and community outreach designed to translate scientific findings into practical solutions for farmers, policymakers, and local communities.

The MoU underscores the growing importance of strong linkages between academic institutions and government agencies in addressing the challenges of climate change.

By combining NiMet’s technical expertise with Landmark University’s research capabilities, the partnership is poised to strengthen climate monitoring, expand climate education, and drive innovation for a more sustainable and climate-resilient Nigeria.
