The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for strengthened and more coordinated efforts to safeguard schools across Northern Nigeria following recent security incidents affecting some learning institutions.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, noted that the concerns raised by parents and communities over reported abductions underscore the importance of adopting comprehensive measures that ensure uninterrupted learning nationwide.
Ememobong acknowledged the steps already being taken by the Federal Government and security agencies, stressing the need for continued collaboration among all levels of government to enhance school protection. He said that protecting the country’s educational system is a shared national responsibility.
He emphasised that while some states have adopted temporary safety measures, long-term solutions remain vital, particularly in regions with high numbers of out-of-school children. He referenced UNICEF’s data on Nigeria’s out-of-school population, underscoring the importance of keeping children in classrooms and maintaining steady progress in national education development.
The PDP spokesperson welcomed the President’s directive assigning the Minister of State for Defence to visit affected communities, adding that continuous high-level engagement would reassure citizens and support ongoing operations by security personnel.
He further urged the Federal Government to fully implement and fund the National Policy on Safety, Security, and Violence-Free Schools, which promotes community participation, early warning systems, and swift emergency response structures.
Reaffirming that the security of lives and property remains a critical duty of government at all tiers, the PDP advocated deeper cooperation, improved resource deployment, and strategic partnerships aimed at reinforcing peace and stability across the country.
