President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria’s re-election into the International Maritime Organisation IMO Council has affirmed global confidence in the nation’s commitment to safety, security, environmental stewardship, and rules-based maritime operations.

Welcoming Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium at the organisation’s General Assembly in London, the President, in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, described the outcome as ‘a resounding affirmation of Nigeria’s growing maritime stature and influence on the global stage.’

The Nigerian Leader noted that “the achievement underscores the country’s constructive role in shaping global shipping standards and strengthening international cooperation.”

Strategic engagement

President Tinubu also commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the Ministry, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Nigeria’s diplomatic mission for their strategic engagement and professionalism throughout the election process.

He further stated that “Nigeria’s new mandate at the IMO aligns with his administration’s broader agenda to unlock the full potential of the blue economy, develop maritime infrastructure, combat piracy, and position the country as a leading regional shipping hub.”

He assured the global maritime community of Nigeria’s readiness to work collaboratively to ensure safer seas, cleaner oceans, and more efficient maritime transport systems, while championing fairness, innovation, and cooperation in international maritime regulation.

Active contribution

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to member states for their goodwill and support, promising that Nigeria will justify the trust placed in it through committed leadership and active contribution to advancing global maritime objectives.

Nigeria’s re-election into the leadership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marks the country’s return to the global maritime governance body after a 14-year absence.
