The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) Southeast Zonal Office in Awka, Anambra State, has inaugurated a Joint Market Monitoring Taskforce (JMMT) to address the circulation of unsafe, counterfeit, and substandard products across markets in the region.

Speaking at the event, Southeast Zonal Coordinator Obialor Francisca described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening consumer protection and promoting fair competition.

She said the task force was created under the FCCPC mandate to sanitise markets, eliminate deceptive practices, protect consumers from harmful products, and ensure a level playing field for businesses.

She emphasised the importance of collaboration and thanked market unions, traders, and other stakeholders for their ongoing support.

Obialor also referenced recent enforcement actions in Aba, Abia State, and Awka, Anambra State, where business outlets were sealed for impersonation and non-compliance with quality standards.

Chief of Consumer and Business Education at the FCCPC Southeast Office, Sunny Leonard, highlighted the dangers associated with fake and substandard products and urged consumers to always confirm product authenticity before making purchases.

He reminded traders and manufacturers that the FCCPC Act of 2018 renders the “No Refund After Payment” policy invalid, affirming that consumers have the legal right to lodge complaints and receive refunds when necessary.

Head of Surveillance and Investigation, Ebere-Eke Lucy, outlined the Commission’s framework for complaint handling, investigations, and enforcement.

She underscored the FCCPC’s commitment to swift, evidence-driven responses and stressed that cooperation among consumers, businesses, and regulators is essential for strengthening market integrity.

Market leaders expressed support for the new taskforce. Charles Anierobi (CID), Chairman of Eke Awka Market, called for tighter oversight of the abattoir to ensure the sale of healthy meat.

He also requested guidance on safe grain preservation, prompting Obialor to recommend natural methods such as using bay leaves and pepper.

Representatives from other markets including Sampson David of Ogbaru Main Market and Okpara Michael from Ochanja Market, Onitsha—commended the Commission’s efforts to sanitize markets and called for continued regulatory vigilance. Anuli Onuegbu, Chairlady of Eke Awka Market, thanked the FCCPC and appealed for more sensitization programs for traders.

In her closing remarks, Obianuju Amanambu, Assistant Director of Legal Services, expressed appreciation to market leaders, taskforce members, and partnering organizations for their contributions to the successful inauguration.

She reaffirmed the FCCPC’s resolve to enhance orderliness, fairness, and efficiency in markets across the Southeast, noting that the taskforce represents a new phase of collaboration for improved consumer protection and safer commerce.
