Voice of Nigeria (VON) broadcaster, Mrs. Cynthia Okere, has been honoured with the 2025 Society of Occupational and Environmental Health Physicians of Nigeria (SOEHPON) Media Excellence Award for Best Occupational Health Report in the Radio/Social Media category.

The award was presented at the inaugural Media Excellence Awards and 2025 SOEHPON Conference Gala Night, held in Lagos state, Southwest Nigeria.

This marks the second time Mrs. Okere is receiving the coveted recognition, underscoring her consistent dedication to reporting issues that shape workplace safety and public health in Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, SOEHPON National President, Dr. Musa Shuaibu, said the awards were instituted to celebrate journalists who have advanced occupational health practices through compelling and impactful storytelling across television, radio, print, and digital platforms.

He noted that Okere’s work stood out for its depth, clarity, and relevance to Nigeria’s evolving labour and health landscape.

Mrs. Okere’s award-winning report, which aired on VON’s network news and circulated widely across YouTube, the organisation’s website, and other social media platforms, drew national attention to the urgent need for improved occupational health standards.

According to SOEHPON, the report significantly boosted awareness and inspired calls for stronger collaborative campaigns to educate workers on safety compliance.

In her remarks, Okere described the honour as a reaffirmation of her passion for advocating safer working environments.

She highlighted the immense influence of social media in amplifying educational content and reaching wider audiences.

“Thank God for social media, which has made it easier for us to create a positive impact in our environment. Use it wisely and purposefully, not just for monetisation. Keep showcasing your work consistently, and one day, your efforts will be recognised,” she said.

Her message served as a motivating call to journalists to harness digital platforms responsibly, using their craft to enlighten, empower, and drive meaningful societal change.

She emphasised that in an age where misinformation spreads rapidly, journalists remain crucial in shaping narratives and providing credible guidance that safeguards citizens’ well-being.

SOEHPON, the professional body representing occupational and environmental health physicians in Nigeria, continues to champion workplace safety and environmental health.

Through research, advocacy, and policy engagement, the organisation works to promote improved safety standards across industries and influence legislative reforms that protect Nigerian workers and their communities.

Mrs. Okere’s recognition reaffirms the essential role of quality journalism in spotlighting issues that affect workers’ safety and shaping a healthier, more informed society.
