African workers stand in Solidarity with Niger and Condemn the Terrorist Attack on Diori Hamani International Airport

The regional trade union organisation said it was shocked by what it called the “cowardly attack.”

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Comrade Joel Odigie, ITUC-Africa “expresses its profound shock and condemnation following the cowardly terrorist attack that targeted Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey on the night of January 28-29, 2026.

This barbaric attack, which caused significant material damage and casualties among Niger’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS), represents yet another attempt to destabilise the country and undermine the patriotic march toward national sovereignty and renewal that Niger has been pursuing since July 26, 2023.

“ITUC-Africa strongly condemns this terrorist act aimed at destroying Niger’s airport infrastructure and spreading fear and disaffection among the population,” Odigie stated.

According to him, such attacks are designed to sow chaos and desolation.

He said, “We are thrilled that the Nigerien people are refusing to allow this dastardly act to break their patriotic and resilient spirit in their journey and struggle toward national renewal and shared development.

“ITUC-Africa salutes the exceptional bravery and gallantry of Niger’s Defense and Security Forces, who demonstrated remarkable dedication and professionalism in neutralisng the mercenaries involved in this attack and defending the nation’s territorial integrity.

It extended its solidarity and support to the people, workers, and government of Niger, as well as to their affiliated organisations in the country.”

While wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured in the attack, “We charge and urge them to continue their efforts without relenting to ensure the country’s stability and security,” the ITUC-Africa Scribe said.
